Thanks for the info HMV1944. Would you be able to post a copy of your Amp circuit diagram, please?

Regards, David

David,
Certainly I can send you a copy. Can you let me know your address in a private message?

Oops! Got that wrong! Here are some photos and the circuit I drew (hopefully with all the corrections in place).

I can throw a bit of light on usage - these were supplied by several UK local education authorities as the standard receiver for schools. Usually placed on a heavyweight trolley for moving from classroom to classroom along with an enormous speaker. Dates? Certainly in use in 1957 in Lancashire schools. I seem to recall a later addition of a Clarke & Smith record deck which used the amplifier. However portability was lost. I might have a picture of a classroom with the students paying the rapt attention of those times to BBC Schools - I guess the enthralling <<MUSIC AND MOVEMENT>> broadcast! Will search when back home.

Thanks, my Sound Sales amp has 1947 stamped on the electrolytic can. Sound Sales amps were used by the BBC. Those examples now sell for over a thousand (pounds).

Many thanks KW2000 and Alan for the info.
I guess Sound Sales was another of these lesser known companies who flourished in the 40's & 50's, then went out of business or were absorbed into one of the major electronics manufacturers. Similar to my findings whilst researching "Coastal Radio" and "Rees Mace" a while ago.
Thankfully, there seems to be a dedicated wee band of enthusiasts who, (like me & "Coastal Radio"), are determined to keep them in decent working order.

Regards, David

There's an article on a very similar tuner in Issue No.148 April/May 2014 of Radio Bygones.

Does selling price have anything to do with presence or absence of PX4s perchance? I sense magpies at work...

A grand for just a couple of used PX4s is a bit steep- the amp itself (or at any rate the wound components must count for something. Pretty much any push pull valve amp with some credibility will fetch hundred(s) these days. They won't hurt the price and there's a good chance that if the whole tuner/amp were sold, only the amp would survive

For those who are interested and subscribe to Radio Bygones, there is an article on Sound Sales products in the latest issue (No.148, Apr/May 2014).

This is a bit of a coincidence - my article being published in RB while this thread is running! - I had not been on this forum for a while and just happened to log in this morning. Just about all I know about Sound Sales is in the article, so I would recommend that interested folks read it - it provides what I could find out about the company and several other of its products. However, if you don't have a subscription to RB (no excuse!) I may be able to answer questions. The DX Plus-3 that I have is a tuner only (no lovely PX4s in this one) - it works very well when fed into an amp though - (a slightly-later period QUADII and University S-5 'Senior' speaker).
