Error 403

Just got this error when replying to the thread about the RS Output Transformer. I managed to reply on the second attempt ok. I then tried to edit the reply and got the error 403 again, so gave up.

This happened at approx 13.45

I can't see anything wrong with the post, and my being a moderator wouldn't stop me getting database system errors like 403s. We may never know what the problem was. Paul Stenning will see this thread at some stage and it's his decision how to proceed.

I can add a after the ? with and without a space between with no problems when I preview.

I'd need to know the exact text entered which causes the error, probably best as a screenshot. The shortest text that causes the problem to occur consistently.

If you are using emojis from a mobile device though, they don't work correctly here and are outside the area I would try to get fixed. Only the smilies within the forum system are expected to work.

That's a good point. Emojis are unicode characters which aren't supported, and trying to use them will produce unpredictable results.

I used the one from the forum, as I know the ones on my phone give strange results. It's no big deal and I haven't seen it since. It's just that someone said that you wanted to know if it happened since the 403 error someone had the other day.

Just to add the problems of accessing the site, I got this at 11.27 UTC (last night Oz time). I tried several times a few minutes apart.

All other websites I visited either side of that time opened without problem.

Affected both Firefox and Chrome browsers.

I have just tried to start a new thread with a few pictures attached and when clicking on the preview or submit new thread buttons I get error 403. No emojis. Removing the pictures made no difference. How best to investigate this?

I collected this from forum member RichardGM a couple of days ago thinking it would be a nice winter project to bring this once-noble set back to its best. On removing the back to have a quick look round I was surprised to be presented with a set of B9A and B7G valves. Looking further the loudspeaker and output transformer were rattling around loose in the cabinet. And then I looked at the back of the rear panel to see a written note “rebuilt in April ’59 “ with all the valve changes noted.


I can only guess that this must be an unfinished project. It seems to have the original mains transformer, but there is no obvious modification to achieve the necessary 6V heater supply. It must have taken some serious work to put in a different set of valves , not exactly equivalents, and change some component values to suit. I wonder if it ever got as far as testing? The loudspeaker was not connected to anything, clearly having its connections severed and replaced with a horrible choc-block. The metal bracket it was resting on is either not original or there is a bit missing, as when all is lined up together the speaker doesn’t line up with it’s hole in the cabinet. Nor is there enough room to fit the output transformer in its normal position. Perhaps the rebuilder lost interest in it before finishing.

So could this have ever worked?

What was the title?

The double quotes around "rebuilt in '59" look odd. Have you copied the text from a word processor which has done some fancy formatting?

I can't account for that, but those double quotes do look like Unicode characters to me. As said earlier, they will produce inconsistent and unpredictable results.

Yes! As recommended by others I compose lengthy posts in MS word and then CTRL C and CTRL V. A point to watch out for in future.

Just use something like Notepad or Wordpad for drafting. It'll probably run faster too.

I think you can stop Word messing around with quotes like this, but can't remember how to do it.

I was wondering if its anything to do with an apostrophe in the '59 appearing between the double quotation marks.

A reminder that was getting the same error occasionally when merely clicking on links to move from reading one forum post or thread or subsection to another. It hasn't happened to me since the weekend before last though.
