Default EKCOVISION TMB272 Mains/Battery Portable TV 1956 VHF Radio also?

Just seen a previous thread mentioning VHF radio working on these sets. Did they all have radio or were there different versions. If so how do I tell which version I have?

Seems I’m fortunate in having the original mains lead and complete aerial.

Not particularly familiar with the TMB272 but if the one in the picture is your set then it looks like it has the three VHF/FM radio channels "H", "T" and "L" on the channel selector - these are preset to "Home" (now Radio 4), "Third" (now Radio 3) and "Light" (now Radio 2).

I have owned several of these over the years and still have 2 examples (ones a spares mule) they have all been the same, all had radios and seemed to be identical down to the last screw.

Amazing how many have survived.

Cheers

Yes plenty about, I have one here. They were the only TV you could legally watch in the front of your car while driving in the UK.

Yes. Has H, L and T on the channel selector for Home Light, and Third radio stations. Also VHF socket plugged in from aerial. Not noticed that before.

Does screen still light up when redundant on radio?

Not seen it described as a TV/radio when listed for sale. Would have thought makes it more interesting, useable and desirable.

Radio channels on your modern digital TV. Nothing particularly new there then.

Thanks. Pictures to follow.

Intrigued to know how something as big as this was fitted for road use.

On this set, the timebases and CRT heater is disconnected on radio to conserve power, though on 12V battery power it still takes about 9 amps!!

It has a vibrator to generate HT.

Hi,
NO, the export version with FM-sound and 625 lines, sold to Italy,
has no FM!
For that it has 12 or 13 TV channels (Band I & III).
I own one of these.

Regards,

Turret tuner I assume? Presumably tied to channel numbers? Ekco wouldn't have known which area of the UK the set would be used in. It might be moved from one area to another.

Came with mains lead. Looks like it needs rewiring with a new mains lead. Didn’t have the 12v lead. Told it was used outdoors. Shame.

Got a 100w bulb and lamp limiter. Might give it a try if it looks OK inside.

Came with a Hitachi Instavision Trimode as was the later replacement. Fortunately the owners never got rid of anything. Should really stay together.

Pictures.

Different masts used different channels (frequencies) otherwise if you were between transmitters you might suffer the "Penge effect" a null where you pick up neither.

Cheers

Two services which, in order to provide coverage nationwide, required at least 8 channels (frequencies) - 13/14 channels were allocated by international agreement - this set had a 13 channel turret tuner but 3 positions were occupied by FM radio so 10 positions remained for TV - on 625 line model no radio facility was included so all 13 tuner positions were available for TV

This is from wireless trader, the 7 amps DC it requires would mean a chunky battery for a picnic !
