Default BSR reel to reel repair.

Help sought. Found after 50 years in poor condition.
Electrical side appears to work ok, mechanical side not working properly.

Select lever A forward releases brake on tape drive. Holding lever B forward engages drive wheels D and E with motor spindle F causing tape head to rotate.

Problems: lever B has to be held in forward position to engage drive wheel D with spindle F.

Selecting lever A to position left or right has no effect.

Any help with set up and adjustment would be very much appreciated

Thanks in advance.

I am sure you mean the capstan is rotating!

The first thing I would do is to degrease all the pivoting parts levers etc, apply light oil to the pivots, then see what happens.

Not sure of the model but it could also be the latch bar on the levers stuck; this also needs the dried grease removing then oiling.

This is probably greased up - everywhere!! The lever on the front, the things it drives.... greased up solid.

Also, the spool carriers need to come off and underneath, they need to be taken out, cleaned and put back in.

There's not a lot to go wrong as such here, apart from grease and muck!!

Cheers,

Steve P.

Sounds like the circular spring attached between the chassis and the level / plate containing the pressure pads, pinch wheel that pivots on the control level has snapped. Does the play wind control NOT snap into play and wind positions?

As others have said, the clean up of the old grease is an essential job with these decks

I'd go for the spring that Paul mentions - it was a common fault.
Same spring is used in the UA14 and other BSR autochangers.
