Default BT landline phones 1980?

I used these until taking out my BT landline five years ago. Can anyone date them and will they work with modern lines? The second I have marked ‘ pulse dial only’ and is called a Viscount.

It's an Ascom 'Berkshire' phone, Pete. We were using them in year 2000 and maybe two or three years before that, as they did a model that was RF resilient (this was for use on a high-power broadcast radio transmitting station).

Yes, they'll work on a modern line. I have a twenty-memory version on my bedside table. A more modern version was made with a streamlined case, but weren't built as well as your version.

You might find the 'mute' button useful as if you use it in a noisy environment the mic is quite sensitive and the side-tone will get very loud.

The other BT instrument will work fine too.

I remember my Aunt & Uncle had a Viscount just like this one, they didn't know they were still paying rent on it even though it was replaced by a newer phone they had bought.

Even when they cancelled the rental BT still wanted it back rather than offer them a token price for it!

I had a bright green viscount installed in 1986 in my tiny loft bedsit! Green being my favourite colour, I ordered it at the BT sales centre (Was it 150?) thinking it would be perhaps a darker shade! However it was really bright green - & I loved it, wish I still had it.....Those were really happy days, young. single & full of life!

... as long as you are connected to a service that accepts loop-disconnect (pulse) dialling - or have a pulse-to-tone converter. Without a converter, you can't use it to "press 1 to continue..." etc.
