Default Problems with sound on a Gecophone

Hello
I have a problem with a black bakelite Gecophone (king pyramid with a dial)
I have rewired it in accordance with britishtelephones.com and the phone dials out and also rings when dialled into.
The problem is the sound quality. I can hear the dial tone but just barely and I can hear no sound when I dial out.
I have changed the transmitter for a type 21A but it is exactly the same.
The other peculiar issue is when I add a rectifier element across red and green transmitter cords as per the advice the bells stop ringing when it is dialled into.
I have double checked the wiring and it is correct.
Can anyone offer any advice on how to proceed

Is the diaphagm in your receiver cludged up with rust, or touching the poles of he magnets? Or bent?

Can you feed audio from a radio set or a tone-source (about 700mV) into your receiver disconnected from the telephone to check it receives that OK?

Here's how I wired mine, and it works.

Hello
Problem solved. It appeared to be related to the points either side of the plunger. One was bent out of shape and they were caked with grime.
Managed to sort out both fairly quickly
Many thanks to those people who took the time to reply
