Question Tesla Magnetic Generator

What is the principle behind the Tesla Generator? Is it possible to build one from readily available components?

Please could you clarify what device you are referring to? Tesla was one of the men behind the concept of polyphase electrical machines and supply, and would have recognised any modern 3-phase generator or motor as developed on the same principle. However the term 'Tesla generator' or 'magnetic' generator is mostly used today by non-engineers to describe machines for obtaining free energy using putative methods that contradict accepted principles of physics. Constructing such machines still appears to be a popular pastime, despite universal failure to produce the desired effect. They may have little or nothing to do with the work of N. Tesla.

The popular Tesla Coil is a different thing altogether. It is a double-tuned self-resonant transformer that works on accepted principles and can be quite easily constructed.

The have been constructional articles over the years in Electronics Today International for fairly simple DIY projects, and there are more ambitious projects beyond the scope of novices.

This very well illustrated physics project explains the theory of how Tesla Coils operate:

Here are some other links that you might find interesting, particularly the splendid 'Mikes Electric Stuff' site:

Hope that helps a bit.

All "free energy from carefully-arranged permanent magnets" scams (in case that's what you are referring to) rely on potential energy being stored up when the initial arrangement is created. They run down in the end, just like wound springs. There is always a stable equilibrium point where the attractive and repulsive forces cancel out.

Julie: quite so. All dynamic systems 'aim' at reaching a point of minimum energy. That concept is the essence of the second law of thermodynamics.
