Decca 101 Vintage early TV set.Value? - UK Vintage Radio Repair and Restoration Discussion Forum

I have a Decca vintage TV set in a lovely cabinet, in great condition which I need to sell. It actually belongs to my mother and she is moving into a flat, so does not want to take the set with her due to lack of room.

It is currently located in Corby, Northants. I attach a few photos.

I have absolutely no idea on its value so will need some expert guidance on this!

Let me know your thoughts and where I can find a willing buyer who will look after it well. It has been in my family from new, having initially been bought by my grandparents.

I look forward to receiving expert opinion in due course and thanks in advance.

Hi James. It so happens I bought one of these , also in good condition for £35 in 1985. According to the UK inflation calculator that makes it now worth about £117.
The real answer is that these sets are worth as much as someone is willing to pay for them. This model is not particularly rare or special and £120 might be what you would ordinarily get, but if you struck lucky and someone just happened to be after this particular set for their collection you could get much more. You can post a 'for sale' ad elsewhere on this site, but undoubtedly you are going to reach the biggest number of potential buyers through the 'Vintage television' section of ebay. Most collectors like me check it weekly for interesting stuff. Hope this helps. Stephen

It is certainly in very good condition. to find an original set this age that has been looked after like this is fairly uncommon I would think. It deserves to go to a collector who will cherish it or even a Museum?

It's true that selling it ebay will find its worth but it may not go to a sympathetic owner.. God forbid that it got into the hands of a "up cycler" .

Like that hideous green Decca 121 cabinet I bought two years ago.

The danger of desecration cannot be denied. When I bought mine from a junk shop, the vendor said words to the effect of 'It will make a nice drinks cabinet'. When I told him I intended to restore it to working condition he looked at me as if I were a complete looney.

I think this set deserves to go to someone who will restore it, it is far too nice to risk going to some idiot who will turn it into a drinks cabinet, or worse!
Maybe a good idea to offer it on here once you have decided on a price?
At least that way you know it will go to a good home.

I would say on this occasion do not sell on any auction site, when there are plenty of us out there that can restore and treasure a set like this.

Plus put pictures on the set via a standards converter.

Thanks for all the replies. I agree about the dangers of selling on eBay, which is why I searched for and found this community as I thought I would be more likely to find someone who will cherish and look after the set!

I will respond to the PMs now.

Hopefully, the set will soon find a good new home.

I have had the same reaction when picking up sets I have bought. Showing sellers pictures of your collection sometimes makes their reaction worse!

I bought a set from a chap who was a builder, he said he had intended to gut the set and sell the cabinet but couldn't work out how to get the tube and chassis out so he left it. He said that he had "nearly done it with an angle grinder..." I did explain what may have happened to the tube if he had tried that...
