Success !

I've re-flowed all of those through-hole rivets and used some switch cleaner on the pushbuttons. It seems so much better, though I might give the other side a going over too.

Well it definitely seems better, I realise why there was a post-it note covering the transformer mounting. I think the other connector which allows for servicing along the back of the top pcb was shorting out, so I have insulated the metal with kapton tape.
