7 inch reel spools and boxes by National which later became National- Panasonic. These are quite rare and i got mine from my family in Malta but i think they were quite common in Australia too. Anybody has these too?
I also acquired recently the 5 inch versions of the 3 spoke spool and i will attach it too.

Some very old Maxell spools and boxes. Some of these i believe were acetate based. I have some 5 inch ones but would love to have the different coloured 7 inch...i believe there was a red, green, blue and purple box. Any advance on that?

Hi.

Does anyone know whether 'Lafayette' and 'International Electronics' were linked? My tired old head may be deceiving me but I'd swear I've seen the 'Lafayette' box design with the 'International' name.

PS: As an aside, I used lots of the 'International' stuff when I was young - it was cheap and I was broke - and I never had a single problem. In my opinion very underrated.

You can see the 'International' box in post #21 above, it doesn't really look like a Lafayette box does it?

My father used a couple of reels of international, it was awful, it kept streching whether this was because he used double play tape I'm not sure.

I mentioned this to a friend this morning and he emailed the attached photo. Question answered I think!

Your comment re the 'stretchy' tape is interesting. I genuinely never encountered any problems at all. You may well be right about the double play thing. I think I only ever bought one reel of DP. I have some very old 5" & 5.75" reels of International in my collection and they still seem OK - no shedding.

Here is my oldest tape box, a 7" reel of Philips EL3914 LP tape from 1963. Sadly I don't have the original reel.

Here are a few more.

First two are language lab booth tapes, 900ft of Lp tape on a 5 3/4 inch spool, with a 1.5m leader complete with stop foil, to prevent the student tape running off the reel. Tape stock very similar on both; Agfa PE 36 maybe?

3" scotch mailer tape, early 60s. Standard play

3" EMI mailer tape, late 60s. Standard play.

4" Philips LP tape, late 60s. 600ft!

Following on from another recent post under tape-recorders, I wonder if the contributors, above, could tell us the colour of the tape and colour of the leaders - bearing in mind not all leaders will be original? I would be happy to compile it.

for example:

BASF LGS35 - light brown, green leader, red tail
Ilford-Zonal LP (1970) - light brown, yellow leader, blue tail

Please note the moderator comments in post #1.

In any case, I don't think this would be helpful with randomly acquired used tapes. The tapes are often on the wrong reel, usually after playing (though this is actually considered good archival practice.) The tapes often have missing or replacement leaders and trailers following home editing or splice failure. Finally, the tape itself may not be what it appears unless a tape code is physically printed on the back.

From a box of tapes acquired several years ago. Sadly, they had been bulk-erased before I got them, otherwise I might have found some interesting stuff on some of them. This one seems to be brand new:

The BBC used a lot of those 5" spools with big hubs. They only store 450' rather than 600', but they could be used in Uher Report portables to record interviews and then be edited on their big studio Studers without overstressing the tape.
