Could not find a gear cover so ended up making one, just need to weld and paint it now.
Slowly finding and modifying any 24 dp gears to fit. |

The gear cover looks quite good, is it formed/beaten aluminium or a casting, a few pics at different angles would be nice if you could.

It is made out of 3mm ally sheet, once annealed I could do the straight bends by hand over a metal bar and then hammered over the edges.
Once it is welded and cleaned up it should look ok. Might have gone slightly overboard on the coil winding area though. |

But that means you've got room for the Jacob's ladder in the corner to complete the Mad Scientist's Laboratory look!
![]() Don't forget that a guard must require a tool to remove it to comply with your insurance. Oh, and I don't think anyone here has ever said they've got too much space for their hobby...

Can you quote chapter and verse on that please. What insurance are you referring to? The guards on my manual machine tools are held in place with knurled fixings. The CNC machines have electro-magnetic locks on the guards which prevent them for being opened when the machine is running.

Ah, l might have shot myself in the foot there, Graham.
![]() I'm probably mixing it up with the dreaded H&S regs. and Company insurance. Perhaps we should curtail this discussion and let Dennis crack on with his excellent work...

The gear cover looks really good. Regarding the gears, you can advertise in Model Engineer magazine FOC for gears or a reader may have some available. Ted

Atlas lathes use 24DP change gears, and are reasonably common, if that's any help.

Smart and Brown 1024 gears are also 24 dp.
I can get the gears from HPC gears for a sensible price so will probably order the last six that I need from them soon. |

If you have a 3D printer are not too hung up originality then it is possible to 3D print gears, I've seen it done with lathe screw cutting gears.
