Lx90rtl - UK Vintage Radio Repair and Restoration Discussion Forum

Not sure if this should really be posted here, or to the Vintage-Amateur or Vintage-Domestic side - it kinda intersects them both.

Just worked LX90RTL on 60 Metres SSB - it's a 'special event' station to celebrate 90 Years of broadcasting by Radio Luxembourg.

I'm sure that if you were alive in the 60s and 70s [and even the 80s] you would have been aware of Luxembourg. Originally starting on Long Wave, its big audiences came in the 60s and 70s where "Lucky Luxembourg" and 208 were their taglines - along with ads for Horace Batchelor's "Infra Draw" K-E-Y-N-S-H-A-M, and Stimorol chewing-gum.

Their chart-show was on Tuesdays and so was half-a-week ahead of the BBC's Sunday-night offering.

RTL closed its MW service in 1991. A sad loss, but if you hear/work the LX90RTL special-event station it could bring back memories.

One aspect of Luxembuorg on MW was its function as a stepping stone on the career paths of many presenters, throughout its life. Former Watery Wireless colleagues of mine thus gained sufficient professional experience to make the next step into BBC local radio or ILR. But not me! I'm not the right material!

Looking back on this career path and its opportunities throws the changes in the industry since then into sharp focus.
