Default The Birth of Television BBC Documentary

Just recovered this http://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/41a69335f...86bb401e76b5e3

Its got interviews and footage from the first days of tv broadcast and even shows the mechanical tv capture process using the original bbc equipment.

Will be up on my youtube channel this evening

Alan

Thanks for that, downloaded for a late night after dinner viewing when SHMBO has gone to bed. It is a bit rough but content over style and it still exits, I wonder how many interesting programmes have been lost.

Yeh it's a little rough. Had to constantly a just tracking to get a stable picture. First time I captured it totally unwatchable but this capture is ok few drop outs but not too bad

Thanks for posting this, I have downloaded for this evenings viewing
I don't recall seeing this before, maybe something that should be re-broadcast on BBC4 (if it still exists).

Thanks for uploading the video. It is certainly IMO much better than the recent anniversary programme.
Informative whilst also being entertaining.

A good documentary. Thanks for posting the YouTube.

Leslie Mitchell's HMV900 was giving sterling service, almost as good as a modern!

The breakdown of the BBC viewer reaction survey results was interesting:

Baird 21 sets
HMV 17 sets
Marconi 12 sets
Other 24 sets

I always say that the BBC should do a full series just on the history of the BBC.

totally agree that would make for an interesting show. I have met a few old gard from the bbc and there always have good stories. wish they would work with the archive guys like myself and not fight us.

Glad you all are enjoying it

Hi Alan,

Thanks for uploading that.
I loved it, its right up there with 'Magic Rays of Light'.
I didn't know before about the book mentioned at the end (Here's Looking at You by Bruce Norman), so I've just obtained a second hand copy. I've not had the chance to read it yet...

Cheers

There was also 'The Fools On The Hill', a drama based on the rivalry between the two systems, mechanical vs electronic. It's here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCtijZAQJEY

A good fun drama, I watched it 'live' upon the 50th anniversary (the days when you went home from the pub to watch something special), would love a high quality copy.
