Do DVD recorders have RF Coax sockets that TVs can tune into same as VHS had?

Some do, DVD/VCRs combinations more commonly.

I lived in Cornwall back in the early 1970's just down the road from you in Coverack then Helston. I can remember the earliest 625 single standard tellies starting to appear was the 1500 and as ETS in Helston was a main ITT/KB dealer there was also a lot of ITT VC200's around.

After I left Cornwall I trained as a TV engineer in Bath and most of my training in the workshop, college and customers houses was on the BRC 1500 so became very familiar with them. Then even more so at Radio Rentals. I don't think there has ever been such a repair/service friendly set ever built.

I used to be in the TV Trade and used to love working on the 1400/1500, I once bought 32 1400s when a local TV shop closed down
Out of the 32 1400s I got 30 working used the other 2 for spares

Wow that was good going. The 1400's were one of the easier dual standards to work on.
I take it you picked up the 1500 from Bristol. Just out of interest where about's in Bristol was it?

Just after I started work as a trainee engineer the company had a few problems and shut their workshop down so for the first couple of years I did my training in customers houses around Bath. I was also encourage to do do some private work at home, as part of my training, and ended up repairing black and white TV;s that we did not see at work such as the GEC and ITT/KB dual standards. These were much more challenging than the 1400's but it became an important part of my early training.

I lived in Cornwall until I was 16 and remember very clearly how well 405 line worked, well most of the time, then the issues with UHF 625 TV reception from the Caradon Hill and Redruth transmitters when they opened. I found this fascinating and one of the aspects that triggered a life long interest in radio and television.

In nte early 1980's Radio Rentals were still putting out lots of 1500's om new rental contracts. As well as replacing tubes we use to replace components which were know faults. I am trying to remember what they were.
Ref 1400's we kept them on dual standard mode because there were quite a few areas in and around Bath that struggled with UHF 625 line reception and we found it very useful to keep these going on both systems well until 405 finally closed in 1985.

Hi everyone, well at last I have got round to powering up my Ferguson and I have just seen the strangest raster I have ever seen
Can anyone tell me what the problem could be
Could it be something to do with the scanning coils

Not off hand, but don't power it for very long like that !
Most likely a failed (or failing) capacitor in the line drive stage at a guess.

Never come across a raster like that before, the set hasn't been powered up for a long time

I think a good place to start is to tune in a signal and see where the line speed is at.

The bottom half looks like the sort of display you get with an open circuit line scan coil, so it's quite likely that is part of the trouble.

The smoothing can is a collection of capaitors in one can, it's the big silver can, i cannot remember the values of the individual sections but what i would do is find a capacitor of around 47uf ( not critical) of 350v or more working voltage and try wiring from the pos of each section and chassis in turn, if you find one section makes a difference you are probably barking up the correct tree.

Yes I will give that a try, problem is I have been out of the trade since 1985 and I don't have any spares now
