Sanyo Beta VTC5000 - no capstan rotation
As title. Just got this oldie out which was a skip find from years ago. The only obvious problem was c80 1000uF had leaked and corroded the nearby print but it appears to be in the video output section.
Measured the PSU O/Ps, the 12v is at 11.8v, the 9v is 8.8v, the 33v is 31.5v. So whilst not bang on, there's nothing obviously way out there. There is 12v at pin1 at connector (s4006?) on SV2, the capstan motor PCB. Before digging further, any tips? For reference, the 5000 schematic is here.

Is the head drum spinning, Ben?
I have the full service manual for this if you need it. Mark. Last edited by 8 Tracker; 3rd Sep 2014 at 7:59 pm. |

Re: Sanyo Beta VTC5000 - no capstan rotation
Dead as a doornail in rec and pic search!
Will start tracing the schematic. I need to see how the capstan is pushed into action and whether there's an end-of-load/cass-in leaf switch or similar in series that might affect operation if faulty. I'm sure I have another one of this model , unrestored, in the workshop. If I get time over the weekend I may try swapping the capstan motor pcb (in case the TAxxxx driver IC is duff) and if necessary servo pcb.

There is an end-of-load switch operated by a cam as shown in pic 2 below. I would guess this is the prime suspect. Signal path block diagram included for reference.

Re: Sanyo Beta VTC5000 - no capstan rotation
I remember that one of the failings of the Sanyo VTC5000 was the capstan motor itself. I remember replacing quite a few of these for either varying speed or stopping altogether.

Re: Sanyo Beta VTC5000 - no capstan rotation
Capstan motor failure in the hundreds of 5000's I've worked on is RARE.
In fact I've only ever seen that once on a VTC NX100, and I suspect was down to a bad hall effect sensor. I would look over the servo board too and also check by replacement of the capstan motor board to narrow down the area (Which thankfully on the Sanyo's is quite easy compared to Sony). Have you checked for total seizure of the spindle in the top and bottom bearings? .......................Kevin |

Re: Sanyo Beta VTC5000 - no capstan rotation
Thanks to the three of you. Appreciate the pointers.
The flywheel/spindle spins perfectly freely. Will keep looking.
