re #14 yes a Decca DM4C I stipped one out for my aunt many years ago. I shudder to think of all the "old" tvs we dismantled and broke up in those days, and all the good tubes that were just smashed. The cabinet came with the legs so they are contemporary and if I remember correctly the sockets for them were part of the cabinet

I can remember people stripping the guts out of old sets (usually ones with doors) and turning them into little cupboards. When I was a nipper there was a drinks cabinet in my Grandparents front room which had maroon inlaid doors and brass squares on the front. It wasn't until years later when looking at old sets on Ebay that I discovered that this was the cabinet from either a 60's Decca or Philips set. In the late 1990s in Portsmouth I drove past a junk furniture shop and saw a pre-war mirror lid set on the pavement outside. Think it was one of the Marconi's possibly a 702. I jumped on the brakes, got out and walked up to it, opened the lid and it was completely empty!! It had been lined out with material and been used as some sort of storage box. Imagine if it had been complete...

Nevertheless, empty cabinet or not I would have been tempted to buy it.
That ghastly Decca 121 cabinet on display in Newcastle is beyond redemption.

I fully expect to read that you have made an offer for it within the next few days...

Have you got anything to put in it?

There again, It would probably be easier and cheaper to build a cabinet from scratch, than to restore that one.

I wish I could stop seeing such abominations as a personal affront, to be assuaged at any cost!

The price of a bottle of Black Sheep ale maybe.

A chassis for the empty cabinet? Finding the original projection TV innards is out of the question so the best chassis has to the Plessey Mark 1, the same as fitted the Decca 101 which the subject of a recent topic.

So should I sneak out of the shop this afternoon and go to Newcastle and take a look at this thing?

Sadly, this is becoming an all too frequent occurrence. I have seen a few examples of "Upcycling" like this.

Phoned the St Oswalds charity shop in Newcastle that has the Decca TV cabinet, it's still in stock. Evidently, the colour is Emerald Green
From their website: Re-styled by St Oswald’s Hospice offers a unique collection of upcycled furniture alongside a range of new retro-style and local artisan products, from funky record players and telephones to handmade soaps and knitted furnishings.
Each stylish shabby-chic creation started life as a donation to St Oswald’s Hospice before being lovingly hand-painted and repurposed by our skilled team. Using a range of specialist techniques and applications, pieces are transformed from ‘pre-loved’ to ‘re-loved’, often using the innovative, environmentally-friendly Everlong Superior Chalk Paint range, also stocked in store.

So should I save the poor thing? There's enough parts in the shop to make a 12" direct view TV set out of it. I'm thinking of the lines of the Plessey Mark 1 chassis reconstruction, similar to the Beau Decca job seen on this forum.

Hi David,

If the price is right and you have the necessary parts to hand plus a bucket full of paint stripper it would be a good challenge.

You could become the "North East's antidote to up-cycling"

I've got a Philips 1400A you can have, if you want to make a proper projection chassis for it.
Did you ask St. Oswald's if they still had the chassis? It may be in a sealed plastic bag, waiting for an authorised body to remove the 'hazardous material'.

Before this turns into a chimps tea party with those duckie cups an saucers, could this thread be closed in memorandum? John.
