Default Opening Choke on Computer lead.

Is it possible to open the annoying little choke on end of power supply lead ? I need to re-purpose one from an old lead, instead of waiting for a snap together one from China.

John.

Thank you Bill, but not much help, as I need the case and not bothered about breaking the Ferrite core. I expect they are moulded on the cable with no easy way of removing them. I think I will have to order one of the snap together ones from China and wait ... and wait... not ideal when I could have used it yesterday.

John.

How about pulling the inner cable out and carefully crushing the ferrite then?

Do you need the choke? Most of these are but a token to EMC.

Most of them are a complete sleeve/toroid core and are not split. They went on the cable before the connectors were fitted.

Making a split core pair is VERY expensive. The ferrite needs to be ground to a very flat very shiny finish to avoid air gapping. The one-piece ones are just sintered in one go. There's something like a 20-fold difference in manufacturing cost.

Often the plastic housing is moulded straight over the core and cable.

No, I just need the empty plastic case to hide a small circuit on an audio lead. It should look better than a bulge of heat shrink tubing.

Ah, now I understand. A slice through one side along the cable axis with a new scalpel should let you peel the shell away, dunking in hot water will help. They are injection moulded and the plastic tends to stick to the original cable, but not too well. Practice on a duffer.

And a dunk in boiling water will restore it after all the mangling needed to get it off.

I used to collect plastic 35mm film cans for that sort of thing.

That is kind of you if you can find one, the larger the better, but smaller than a film can.

John.
