Snowcap. (Yunost-402de)
Spent the last few evenings working on this fine Soviet set. Had to change a few caps that were leaky, switch cleaner on the pots and had a bit of bother with the line oscillator which was down to a out of tolerance resistor.
However, a word of warning. As I was adjusting the frame linearity, a fizzing noise. Before I knew what was happening, BANG!!! An electrolytic decided to let go, these are not vented so they go with a proper bang. The set had been powered for two evenings and none of the electrolytics were showing any signs of distress, this one just let go. Anyway, the set gives an okay account of itself. Sadly the cabinet is quite bad with a few chunks missing. Dated March 79. Anyone else come across one of these? Cheers, John Joe. |

That was a very grumpy capacitor.
You were lucky it did not blow a hole in the printed circuit. |

I've only come across Snowcap fridges and freezers and that must have been 30 odd years ago.
Didn't know they made TVs. Michael. |

Looking at your picture the cap appears to be running away from it's soldered connections.
It has a head, feet and hands or maybe I have a vivid imagination or have been watching too many spy films.. John. |

I thought it had got fed up with being all cooped up inside the can so it made a break for it.

I think he may have been trying to defect to the west!

From Word Hippo: Seems that the Russian word Yunost translates as " Youth"

Re: Snowcap. (Yunost-402de)
Maarten, no over voltage. 100 volt 20uf cap with 65 volts across it.
Fernseh, the chassis in Shango66's video is very similar to my set. I suppose they kept the same chassis for many years and just kept updating the cabinets to suit style, it's strange working on a set from the late 70's without an ic in sight. Today I set about strengthening the cabinet a bit, I took the tube out and glued the cracks with super glue, I then reinforced them with hot melt glue. I also reinforced the the crt posts with hot melt glue to try too spread the load. Sadly the plastic let's these Soviet sets down, it goes quite brittle over time. I once had one of the little radios with the watch movement fall apart. I think the plastic may be a type of polystyrene. I believe a pvc cable caused the damage to the top of the set. Cheers, John Joe. |

Great to see vintage Sovitet tech in action!
Was there any effort to produce higher-grade consumer electronics items for export? Or would the better items from mass production have been creamed off, for export? Sales to the West were quite desirable as a source of foreign currency. |

Re: Snowcap. (Yunost-402de)
I remember seeing a few of these back in the day, though not with that name. The main problem I remember were very poor quality fuseholders that had no springiness, so after a move it wasn't unusual to find the fuse missing! As usual, they were built like battleships - with the exception of the cabinet, of course. Always came as a surprise to find this chassis when you were expecting a Far Eastern offering.
