Default HMV 2353 stereogram. No sound in one speaker, help please.

Hi

I've just purchased and love my HMV Stereogram 2353 which has worked great for two days. Today the right hand speaker has just gone off and only sound coming from left speaker.

Can anyone help me repair it?

Many thanks, Mark.

Hello Mark, welcome to the forum. My grandparents had one of those, a nice looking unit. It's not clear from your post whether you are looking for someone who may be able to repair it - obviously for something that size they would have to be local - or whether you are specifically asking for help to repair it yourself.

If the former, try placing your request in the "Repair and restoration services wanted" section.

If the latter, we would only be able to help you if you have some pre-existing skills, and you have and know how to use a multimeter, are aware of the risks from working on mains powered equipment, and so on.

Assuming you are able to transport the unit yourself, you could try looking for a so called 'repair café' in your area, volunteers there may be able to take a look at it for you.

This could be anything from loose/oxidised connections on the cartridge connectors to an electronic failure in the left hand amplifier. The loudspeaker itself is probably OK. Have you ever worked with vintage electronics before?

To rule in / rule out the cartridge, is the problem present only when playing records or is one speaker off when the radio is used as well? (assuming this model does have a radio).

Found a photo. This would appear to date from circa 1970 and looks to be a transistorized job. A turntable and tuner in a cabinet that seems to be the size of three washing machines ;-)

The first thing to do is try all sources, to narrow things down. Also move the phono-radio selector switch(es) back and forth a few times to 'clean' the contacts, also the volume and balance pots, see if that helps. If there's a tape or aux input try connecting a cd player or something into it.

Let us know the results and we can take it from there.

Good to know that it's working, but it would be nice to know what you had to do to fix it.
