Advance J4, can't get knobs off
At the risk of great embarrassment. I have the remains of an Advance J4 signal generator I would like to reclaim the parts from ... but I can't get the knobs off. They have no visible means of fastening, from which I conclude they are either fastened at the back, which I can't access because of the chassis, or just pull off the front, for which have tried all reasonable force and a large screwdriver. Anyone know this problem? Thanks.

I've never come across one of those generators, wouldn't be collet knobs would they?

Re: Advance J4, can't get knobs off
Some Advance stuff had knobs which were black bakelite top with a brushed aluminium skirt. These are 2 part knobs, the top part pulls off to reveal the fixing screw for the bottom part.

I seem to have forgotten to attach the pictures. They look to be all one piece.

Re: Advance J4, can't get knobs off
They look very like collet fixing knobs to me. The cap on the top (furthest from the panel) will come off (prise it carefully with a fingernail or even a thin blade). Under it you'll see a screw or nut, which you loosen, and the knob will then come off.

I think they are the collet type, try and prise the centres out.

Excellent! That's great, the tops come off like a lid and inside there's a screw. Mischief managed, thanks.

Oh those tricky chaps at Advance. Confused me when I first tried to take a knob off an H1, It's simple when you know how.
