Re: National NV-8600 problems
Thanks for the link and the service manual. The tension band is really not a big problem. The biggest problem I have is the unloading. Does the capstan motor on your 8610 continue to run to wind the tape to the supply reel when you press stop?

Re: National NV-8600 problems
Some good news: Got the audio problem resolved. I sprayed some cleaner on the audio/video REC/PLAY slide switches and now it records and plays sound like new! I have ordered a belt kit and it's on its way now.

Re: National NV-8600 problems
I was thinking, is there a chance it is a gummed up switch thats preventing it from unloading correctly? I can't remember off top of my head how the unload mech works. I will take the vid apart when I get in and have a proper look.

Re: National NV-8600 problems
Yes the capstan motor should continue spinning while it unloads. It drives the idler via the large square belt underneath to wind the tape back in. I can't quite see in your video, what are the switches behind the head drum doing? You should have the top one closed and the bottom one open during play then both open during unloading and finally the bottom one closes when unloading has finished.

Re: National NV-8600 problems
I got a belt kit today and guess what.. They sent me the wrong belts! The capstan belt was too tight causing wow and flutter in the audio.

Re: National NV-8600 problems
Nightmare. When I got belts for mine they were slightly wrong. There was two of one belt and two other belts were missing. Luckily I had belts of the right size handy, they were just 1mm square ones. The capstan, loading and reel belts etc were ok. You can get assorted sets of belts off ebay quite cheap. Handy for these sort of situations.

Re: National NV-8600 problems
I think the kit they sent me is for the NV-2000 (Later top loading model). The website said 8 belts (so I assumed it would fit the 8600) but they are actually only 6! I hope I can return them.

Re: National NV-8600 problems
Yes hopefully. Are the switches doing what they should be?

Re: National NV-8600 problems
I have really no idea. I must take the unit apart and look for bad solder joints.
