Default Type 24C dial dismantling

I'm trying to get the thing apart but so far it's defeated me. I've got the Governor and spring set off and taken out the screw in the dial but no luck, dial feels well stuck on. I'm guessing I need to remove the brass pillar (with the spring wrapped around it) but when I try to undo it with a screwdriver in the slot at the top of the brass pillar it feels like it's going to break as I'm putting in a fair amount of force.

What's the hidden secret wrapped up in an enigma?
