Default Power plug advice? Pics Inside

Hi,

I'm new to the forum and can't seem to find what I need from the search section.

Need a pointer as to what power supply I need to get this running -

Type V
Garrard unit D15 motor

My partner picked this up at a boot fair, I believe the box these two are in is not standard.

Any advice much appreciated.

That looks like a chassis mounted Bulgin socket (the pins are actually a plug) if it is you will need the plug (the contacts are actually sockets) Search Google images for......vintage bulgin plugs sockets.

Don't think about applying any power until you confirm what's inside the cabinet and do any work to make it safe . This may sound harsh but the age of the wiring inside could well have rotted insulation etc.

I have not seen one before so cannot comment on what you will find.

Great stuff, appreciate the speedy replies, I'll do some more research and take the box apart.

You'll also need to re-build the pickup heads as the rubber parts will have gone rotten and be solid which will cause low or no output and will damage records. It's for 78rpm records only and needs steel gramophone needles that have to be replaced after every record side.

Being a twin-turntable unit, this is designed for continuous play of a sequence of discs. It was probably used for public performance in a theatre, dance hall or cinema.

You could say that it was the basis of a 1930s/40s disco!

There doesn't seem to be any facility for pre-fade listening, unless you were expected to hold your ear up close to the pickup and listen out for the needle chatter?

Be interesting to see what's inside, the cabinet looks quite shallow to have 1930's amplifier in it.

That was probably sufficient. Any misjudgement at 78 rpm was short-lived!

In any case, 'scratching' the record backwards with that trailing steel needle was not a good idea.

AKA: a "Chassis Mounted Plug"

AKA: a "Cable Fitting Socket"

H'mm - I'm not so sure about Bulgin... The standard 5A (abt 22mm dia "pig's nose") Bulgin chassis plug/flying socket as used in a number of vintage amplifiers had a different keyway orientation wrt to the pins, like this one

Having said that, there's nothing to stop you replacing the old chassis plug with a NOS 5A Bulgin chassis plug, assuming they're the same physical size or fairly close. However, as you can see, the free/flying Bulgin sockets are VERY expensive now...

Cheers,

Frank

Bulgin did do a 3 pin connector with the keyway in same orientation as in the OP's photo:

Also regarding the "is it a plug or is it a socket"..."Plugs have pins..Sockets have sockets" their words here:

Ah, so! Mr Bulgin was pretty prolific, then.
