Default Defiant Radio identification please!! Model MSH 553.

Hi,
I've had this rather battle weary Defiant radio for many years, and many years ago it used to work tolerably well! It has been languishing in the loft for far too long so I decided to get it functional again.
Can anyone identify what model it is? The sticker on the rear cover has long since disappeared.
It's from 1952 and has a 6C9, 6F15, 6LD20, UU9 and 6P25 output valve.
It will receive a few things on MW but weakly and its very quiet at full volume. The audio stage has plenty of gain tested with a screwdriver! (and, yes, I've changed the coupling cap!!)
I could do with a circuit, although I've traced out the more obvious stuff so a model number would be useful!!
As it's now Christmas day, a merry Christmas to everyone!!
Many thanks
Nick

Looks like a Model MSH 553. See the attached extract from a 1952-3 Defiant flyer.

Merry Christmas!

Looks like the very thing!! Many thanks for posting the leaflet.
The service data above lists the MSH 556 which you would imagine might be similar, but it seems to be completely different It's probably in the R&TV servicing books but I am not in the same place as my ones
Merry Christmas
Cheers

The MSH 556 is not listed in either the 1952-3 or the 1953-4 leaflets, these being only Defiant leaflets that I have. There doesn't seem to be any regular progression in model numbering: the numbers of the mains wirelesses in the 1952-3 catalogue (all MSH XXX) are 252, 553, 353, 452, 453, 352, 752 and 551. There were two battery sets, BSH 348 and BSH 249.

The 1953-4 catalogue lists exactly the same range of mains sets, all at lower prices (possibly due to a Purchase Tax reduction), but has dropped the battery sets. The 553 then cost £24 . 10. 0.

Hi Emeritus,
Thank you for your help. The 556 seems to be from '55/56 and has VHF as well. Of the ones on your list, the MSH 452 looks to have the same chassis but a much more stylish case. I couldn't find much info on the others.
So I really need the circuit for a MSH452 or 553. Sadly, there is nothing in the service data above which looks likely.
Can anyone help with either a trader sheet or from the R&TV books? I've also got two BVWS CD roms with all the trader sheets on, but I'm not near those either!
Many thanks
Nick

In general if it was in the trader sheets or in the RTV books it's on Paul's disc on in top right hand. So it's likely to be another source.
Cheers

Hi Nick,
I’ve just acquired one of these and I’m restoring it for a friend. I don’t suppose you found any service information?

Fortunately it’s working so I dont think I’ll need it. I’ll just give it the usual service. It’s the cabinet that needs some TLC.

John

Hello Nick and John

Try looking up the Philco range, the make Defiant was indeed sold by the co-op and sets made for the co-op came from Philco.

Hope this helps

Ken

Thanks for the pointer Ken.

In this case I can't see a Philco with the same valve line up however the Defiant 551 as does the Ambassador 551 (presumably not a coincidence), two years earlier, the layout is slightly different but there is a service sheet for the Ambassador.

Hi John,

I expect that is just a coincidence. I'm not aware that Ambassador made sets for anyone else, and their post-war model numbers were formed by taking first the valve count, then the last two digits of the year - 545, 650, 849 etc.. Defiant numbers on the other hand were consistently all over the place...

Regards,
Paul

Thanks Paul, so it is purely coincidence!

This radio is 1952/3 according to the pamphlet, I have a 555 from 1955 and a 452 which I think is from '52 ... however it has the same chassis as this one so 5 valves not 4, if indeed it was an attempt to have a logical numbering system, more likely random like you say.

I too have failed to find a circuit diagram for this set, but your picture clearly shows the colour coding on two burned up resistors I need to replace in my set.

May I point out the resistors I need to replace and in turn you could advise me of their value/s?

I'm servicing the set for a friend with no profit involved!

Regards,
Wes.

Hi Wes,
No problem at all- I'll be glad to help if I can! As well as pointing to them, trace out where the defective resistors go and then I can be sure we are talking about the same ones!

The radio is conveniently accessible, so if you need more pictures just ask.

All the best
Nick
