Re: Kolster Brandes 666 Valve radio restoration.
Hi
Another question , have mounted the set upside down , and now familiar with which the 2 valves that need testing , but how do i know which would be the heater pins that dont require testing , as the valve housing could be rotated at 90 degrees as found when testing the rectifier valve v6, as quite difficult to see which pins are which , would it harm to check all pins ? |

Re: Kolster Brandes 666 Valve radio restoration.
Standard procedure for me is to Google the valve type and find the link to The Valve Museum. For example:-
http://www.r-type.org/exhib/aaa0301.htm From this you'll see the valve holder type, in this case B5. Click on B5 and you'll see how the pins are numbered. If it's difficult to see the pin layout under the chassis, unplug the valve and check how the valveholder is oriented in the chassis. You could check all pins, but firstly we wouldn't know which pin was which and secondly the heater pins will have AC Volts on them whereas the other pins have DC Volts on them, necessitating using different meter settings. The heater wiring should be fairly obvious as it goes from valve to valve.

Re: Kolster Brandes 666 Valve radio restoration.
This link covers the valve bases in your receiver, valve base types B4, B5 & B7:
https://www.valvecollector.uk/documents/bases/diag5.gif As you can see the pins are numbered. The view is shown from underneath the valves, the valve sockets should be viewed from underneath just the same. The top cap connections on V1, V2 & V3 are the valves anodes. The top cap connection on V4 is the valves grid. The heater pins for V1, V2, V3 & V6 are pins 3 & 4. The heater pins for V4 & V5 are pins 4 & 5. Lawrence. That's V5.
Pin 1 Spare. Pin 2 Control grid. Pin 3 Screen grid. Pin 4 Heater. Pin 5 Heater. Pin 6 Cathode. Pin 7 Anode.

Re: Kolster Brandes 666 Valve radio restoration.
Just thought of possibily easier way to do , if was to wrap piece wire / thin cable wire around each pin of valve except the 2 heater pins plug valve in check each pin this way rather than beneath be lot easier

Re: Kolster Brandes 666 Valve radio restoration.
You could do that, but make sure the wires make good contact and don't short to each other.

Re: Kolster Brandes 666 Valve radio restoration.
O.k
Have tested V5 Results as follows :- pin 1 Getting no reading Pin 2 (volt meter set at 200v ) getting a reading of o.2V plus hearing crackling noise coming from the main speaker pin 3 reading of 230V pins 4/5 not tested Pin 6 reading of 5.3v pin 7 Reading of 225V results not look right could retest |

Re: Kolster Brandes 666 Valve radio restoration.
Pin 1 Spare. 0 Volts. Good.
Pin 2 Control grid. 0.2V?? Good You should switch down the ranges (20V then 2V) to get a better reading. Crackling good too. Pin 3 Screen grid. 230 Volts. Good. Pin 4 Heater. Pin 5 Heater. Pin 6 Cathode. 5.3V shows valve is passing current, but not as much as expected. R19 could have changed value and/or C6 is leaky. Pin 7 Anode. 225 Volts. Good. --------------------- Let's have some readings for V4.

Re: Kolster Brandes 666 Valve radio restoration.
Hi Graham
Have just check to see what make of valve the V4 and found to be a Mullard TDD4 but have noticed that there is a slight split/crack in valve to base all around where the step ridge is very faint and hard to see, yet valve does work , i did see a youtube video on valves a few days ago and said in some cases if a valve is damaged can be repaired with super glue , or would it be best just to replace with new one have attached picture of |

Re: Kolster Brandes 666 Valve radio restoration.
It's not unusual for a valve's envelope to be loose on the base. It can either be glued back with two part epoxy or heat shrink sleeving shrunk over the joint. However in the case of the TDD4 continuity must be maintained between the metallisation and pin 2. You'll often find a thin wire bonded to the metallisation to carry out this function. Don't worry about it for the present.

Re: Kolster Brandes 666 Valve radio restoration.
While your taking voltage readings, check the DC voltage across the field winding of the speaker. I've indicated the appropriate pins of the speaker plug in red.

Re: Kolster Brandes 666 Valve radio restoration.
Glad to see results reasonabily o.k on first valve
Think will try repairing before i condinue as not want to make it worse , i will go try buy some glue and fix now , hopefully if fast drying continue to test in a while, do i need to test all pins on this valve plus connecting node/terminal that clips on on top of valve ? |
