Hi
Have ordered a new C1 Capicitor i believe is a major one and could caused serious damage if this had failed ,
Would fit new larger resistors that look more in sittue with the set closer matching the large ones fitted if i new which be best ones to order plus any other capicitors if you think could possibily be required , would be most gratefull if anyone could help with which i am likely to need (complie a list) and possibly link to order all in one go would be most be helpfull , or could buy individualy on ebay ones that would likely be needed

hello al,l I think post #154 gives you the list of caps ?, resistors I use
2 watt carbon film as they are quite big

Let me try. The = symbol denotes equivalent to.

0.0001uF = 0.1nF = 100pF
0.0002uF = 0.00022uF = 0.22nF = 220pF
0.0005uF = 0.00047uF = 0.47nF = 470pF
0.001uF = 1nF
0.006uF = 0.0068uF = 6.8nF
0.01uF = 10nF
0.02uF = 0.022uF = 22nF
0.05uF = 0.047uF = 47nF
0.5uF = 0.47uF = 470nF
8uF =10uF
25uF = 22uF

Voltage to be greater than or equal to that of the existing component.

-----------------

Most resistor values are the same, but you may have to replace 250k with 270k and 2M with 2.2M.

Power rating to be greater than or equal to that of the existing component.

Hi Graham

Thank you for list
Will try emailing few suppliers today , are these all resistors or capicitors aswell ? ,as not familiar with type numbers , plus wondering would a supplier understand from the list of items needed will mention prefere larger types if have for vintage radio

Capacitors are given the designation 'C' in circuit diagrams and have values expressed in uF (microfarads), nF (nanofarads) or pF (picofards). You'll also have to specify the working voltage.

Resistors are given the designation 'R' in circuit diagrams and have values expressed in ohms, kilohms (kohms) or Megaohms (Mohms). You'll also have to specify the power rating in Watts.

RS Components are pretty good and very quick but in the last few months prices on some components have doubled. They sell mostly good quality branded components.

Hi Graham
maybe a stupid question but , Just one thought with Wattage of compiled list that are required , i can see most of capicitors/resistors are rated at 1/2 watt in workshop manual ,but just a couple are rated at different wattage are any in this list compilled need to be different to 1/2 watt rating, as not sure 100% sure which of capicitors required in list of be ordered and would i need to specify a different wattage when ordering

I would recommend only replace the capacitors at this stage.
Then you can try the radio safely, it may even work at that stage. Take more voltage measurements, determine which resistors need replacing to improve the performance of the radio and buy them in one batch. I have found that only a few resistors need changing in these KB radios, whereas most if not all of the capacitors will need to be changed.

Regarding Voltage and Wattage specifications. Capacitors have the value, in micro farads (uF) and the working voltage, in volts. (V). They also come in a variety of different styles, you cant go too far wrong if you buy "axial" types, e.g. a wire at each end like the original capacitors.

Whereas resistors have their value, measured in ohms, and the power they can take measured in watts (W). When it comes to vintage radios most people go for the 2 watt types as they are bigger and look more in place in the radio. Sometimes you may need a larger wattage. But dont replace any resistors until you have unsoldered one end and checked the actual measured value.

We're going round in circles here.

All capacitors will need to be replaced ultimately. Capacitors don't have a wattage rating. They have a voltage rating.

The resistors I suggested changing were:-

R1 100k 1/2 Watt.
R7 250k 1/2 Watt. If 250k not available use 270k.
R12 25k 1 Watt.
R23 2M 1/2 watt. If 2M not available use 2.2M
R24 500k 1/2 watt. If 500k not available use 470k. ***

*** I'm suspicious of the fact you measured this as 40k. It's wired across L4 secondary so should measure around 57 ohms when in circuit.

At the risk of complicating things you could use 2 watt resistors as replacements. They'll do the job just as well and being physically larger will look better in a set of this age.

Will email the list to couple of suppliers and hopefully will understand the requirements and where applicable 2 watt for the resistors , will explain for restoration of a vintage radio and hopefully have ordered asap

I would never use less than 2 Watt reses as others have stated and they certainly look better.

Resistors have voltage ratings but some sellers don't mention it.
The smaller ones are only rated for 250V.

The 2W resistors are often 350V or even 500V.

The 2W resistors generally have longer and thicker leadout wires which can make installation easier.

Still at moment trying to find capacitors , plus Resistors at 2 watt, lot of resistors at 1/2 watt but smaller in size
Have cleaned chassis up a little plus put some heat shrink aound valve tube as was little loose in its socket base housing

On eBay:-

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Axial-Pol...re3WIIxs9s6IwQ

Rather then buy from multiple eBay sellers you might do better to get everything from a big supplier like RS.

Capacitors for example:-

https://uk.rs-online.com/web/c/passi...led%22:true%7D

There's also Just Radios in Canada:-
