Robert Farnon Society
May I give a plug here for the Robert Farnon Society ?
It belies its name and in fact caters for lovers of all forms of 'light music'. This is typically music of the sort once regularly heard on the Light Programme. The club is a good source of CDs from a wide selection of sources. In particular another couple of 'Guild' CDs have just become available, as they tend to be every three months - whenever the RFS club magazine 'Journal into Melody' comes out. You'll find most of the background music gems used in 1940s/1950s newsreels, films and interludes in this series of CDs. It's all been expertly re-mastered so it sounds just how it did when it was new, yet (happily) still totally original. Sadly, the only radio programme specialising in this genre "The Light Programme" on Radio 3 with Brian Kay, has now been dropped. But this type of music is still being written today. In the latest issue of J.I.M a composer descibes how difficult it has now become to get it performed and recorded. If you appreciate melody and atmosphere and colour in your music, then this is the club for you. Steve
