Default Chinese 1A2 Super Regenerative FM radio kit

At least one Forum member has tried to make one of these kits in 2014.
After a great deal of effort to decipher the Chinese instructions and get the clearest information possible it still did not work.
Did anybody have any better luck?

Would it be fair to say that they are a waste of time?

I am not too keen on super regens unless lots of care is taken to stop them radiating signal back into the aerial.

The description of the kit online says Super Regenerative, but perhaps they aren't. That was the opinion of a old thread on them from 2014.
If you have looked at various kits you will realise how weird the text can be. Technobabble doesn't translate well in an on-line service. When you are dealing with frequencies at which construction has to be much more precise the deck is definitely stacked against you.

Hi
Is the attached circuit diagram similar to yours?

There's an 'interesting' comment that says:

Quote:
Note: 1A2 tube is different from other AC tube, power is not bright, only in the dark case can be issued and its weak light.
I haven't a clue what this gobbledygook is supposed to mean. Someone must know surely. I reckon it's worth purchasing the kit for a challenge and the entertainment value reading that text.

Symon.

It means you can't see the filament glow under normal light, unlike a normal indirectly heated valve.

Hi

Super Regenerative receivers are tricky to get working. There was a good super regen circuit published in EPE magazine by Raymond Haigh in 2003 but that was a transistor circuit. I built that and it worked very well. I will try to see if I can find it.

Symon.

Hi John.

It was part of the Practical Radio Circuits series by Raymond Haigh but I can't seem to see it listed on your link. It would appear that EPE have only offered a selection of the circuits free. Thanks anyway, it's useful to see the other free circuits.

I've just checked and found the circuit is in the October 2003 issue of EPE. I had a rummage in a large box of radio projects in the garage and just came across this project which I built about 12 years ago (see attached pic).

Symon.

Thepillenwerfer,
That article you attached is very good and it illustrates an interesting point about super-regenerative receivers, not only do they work for AM reception, they can do a good job of slope detecting FM too.

The other thing, it's dead easy to turn the stage into a transmitter, with a switch and a few small circuit changes, so they make for a really simple transceiver design.

I have two super-regen transceivers constructed with 6CW4 nuvistors that work amazingly well at UHF. I can't attach the photo currently, but could next week.

The matter under discussion is supposed to be the circuit on post #4.
Here is the old thread on the same circuit: http://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/s...d.php?t=105296
Has anybody successfully completed the kit and actually got FM radio sound from it?

"High Performance Regenerative Receiver" By Raymond Haigh (parts 1&2) is in the Radio section in that list

That's not a super regenerative receiver John.

EDIT.

I may have redeemed myself? 2003 and other years available via this link ..... http://www.diagram.com.ua/english/li...nics-magazine/ I am assuming this site is a legal archive although I cannot be certain. If there are any doubts please delete this reply. I would not wish to infringe copyrights.

Do let us know how you get on.

I think that if anybody else has tried one of the kits they are keeping silent.
They failed to get it to work and are embarrassed about it.
But the fault must lie in the lack of precise instructions.

Hi.

I was trying to find some information on the 1A2 valve and there's nothing on the National Valve Museum website. From my quick searches, there doesn't seem to be an equivalent which I find hard to believe.
I (wrongly) assumed it would be like one from the battery valve portables from the early 1950s.

Symon.

Good luck. I've just re-read the thread from 2014 and see that I gave up. I think I found the translation of the Chinese instructions more entertaining than trying to get audio out of the kit.
I've no doubt the remains of the kit are in a box somewhere.....
