Default HMV 1121 Receiver.

H.

I have an HMV 1121 and the tuning wheel turns but the dial doesn't move. When I looked inside the big wheel doesn't turn and seems to be stuck. It only picks up one station because of this. Can anyone offer any advice on this?

Many thanks, James.

Hello and welcome to the forums.

It'll be a problem with the dial cord, most easily diagnosed by visual observation.

The service information, which includes a dial cord threading diagram, is available here:-

Hello James and welcome from me too.

As Graham has said, the cause may be a broken or slack dial cord which couples the tuning knob's shaft to the "big wheel" (pulley) on the tuning gang.

But it could also be that the cord is slipping because the tuning gang has seized making it too stiff for the cord to turn. A couple of drops of oil in the right place might be all that's needed.

Some photos would be useful so we can assess the general condition. Are there signs of rust or corrosion on or near the tuning capacitor? (the device to which the large wheel is bolted)

The wire on the large wheel is tight with no slack, i cant see any rust either.

Very good condition superficially

You need to remove the knobs, then the chassis from the cabinet to have a better look. The others will no doubt guide you on how to do this.

That's a very nice looking set!

I would not recommend oiling anything at this stage, just take the chassis out of the box and have a good look around.

There are 7 or 8 steps detailed in the Trader service sheet for this wireless, so you should follow the steps as listed.
Suggest you also take good photos for your reference before you remove drive cord. The one thing the service sheet doesn't tell you is how far to expand the spring when replacing the cord.

Having just looked at the appropriate Trader sheet, I see that the third step in removing the chassis is to turn the tuning spindle so as to position the pointer mid-way along the scale so that it can be unclamped from the drive cord, working through the bottom of the set.

This is going to be a problem if the tuning drive is totally jammed!
