Default BBC Radio 2 searching for Pick of the Pops recordings.

Greetings Pop-pickers

Like myself, I'm sure many on here have old tapes of the show stashed away..

So I was delighted to see this on the Radio 2 section of the Beeb's website :

CALLING COLLECTORS

"Remember the lost Dr Who tapes and the lost Dad's Army tapes? We need your help with Pick Of The Pops!

We are looking for recordings of the radio show from when Alan Freeman presented it. In particular from September 1997 and, going further back, various editions from 1966 to 1972.

If you think you might be able to help Radio 2, please email phil.hughes@bbc.co.uk

We'd be pleased to hear from anyone who has recordings "

I know I have an edition from 1970 which was taken from VHF so it's probably suitable for tidying up and rebroadcasting in some form.
One thing's clear listening to the older shows, the pace was certainly VERY slick, especially for the drab "light programme" on which many of the shows would have aired !!

Gosh - when I think back I had loads of it on tape from 1968 to about 1979. But once I'd transferred the records I wanted I'd tape over the show....

I've got some of these shows, many bought from other collectors.

I couldn't find it on the Radio 2 website, could you post a link to it?

Andy, Can I have a copy of your 1970 show? If you can't copy it send it to me and I'll do the honours.

I'll send you a PM.

I used to tape pick of the pops every week. Something tells me this has been asked before on here! I recorded it from a valve FM tuner onto a Philips EL3302 cassette recorder. I had piles of tapes up to 1988 when my mother decided to dump them when I met the wife. The quality was good for cassette of the time, there might me an odd one but please don't hold your breath!

Found one!

From 1972 I think.
One side of a C60
I'd like to teach the world to sing, no 20
Too beautiful to last------------- no 19
Look what youv'e done---------- no 18
Papa Joe ----------------------- no 17
Wings, not played --------------- no 16
Mother of Mine ------------------ no 15
One of those nights ------------- no 14
I can't help myself --------------- no 13
Son of my father ---------------- no 12
Blue is the colour ----------------no 11
Floy Joy -------------------------no 10

The tape is well played and has one glitch quality is still OK and Alan's little jingles bring back a smile.

The other side has test card music on it, recorded about the same time from a Murphy V430 TV I had.

Can anyone identify the week?

Thanks Baz.
How about side two, Beethoven's Pastoral (no 6) then some BBC1 music recorded at 3 3/4 ips (modified cassette motor) with noticeable 10,125 hz line whistle, Must be worth a fortune!!!!

Hi Michael,
Certainly you can have a copy of the 1970 show, sadly it's incomplete and worse I transferred much of my earliest tape material to cassette. I seem to recall it sounded half decent last time I heard it.
I also found today 2 cassettes labelled "POTP of the 70s" which was a retrospective Fluff did of the whole decade, I think it was NY eve 1979 ?
May have been Capital rather than the Beeb, as he did "POTP-Take 2" for Capital for some years.

I had the pleasure of working with Fluff on several of his Sat. Rock shows whilst at BBC Radio -
I still treasure some voice overs which he made for me.
I mentioned to him at the time ( c.1978) that he must have had a few recordings of his own 'tucked away' ,as I played him a clip of one of his late 60s shows.
His reply left me gobsmacked :
"d'you know, I haven't got one recording of Pick of the Pops - Not One ! "

A very self-effacing guy - still sorely missed.

A.

I have a number of shows which I recorded in the 1980s - like a lot of people did I expect. I will hunt them out to find out exactly what I have. Interestingly whilst I was having a quick look - I came across a Radio 1 test broadcast which went out in the Dorset area in September 1988 when we finally got Radio 1 in "clear, exciting FM stereo!"

I should think complete editions will be few and far between, if fragments I've found on old reel-to-reel tapes are anything to go by.

Most people wanted to cut out the DJ patter and hit the pause button as soon as Alan Freeman started to speak, probably in an effort to get as many songs as possible on the tape. Domestic recordings are notoriously disjointed and often annoyingly incomplete.

Then there's often the issue of horrible quality microphone recordings...

The only exception to the rule I've found so far is hours of virtually continuous Radio 2 from one Sunday in October 1973, spread over several 7" 4-track spools running at 1 7/8ips giving surprisingly good quality. I think the whole Top 30 with Tom Brown(e) is present and correct.

I used to record the show every week from about 1959, or at least my dad did while I was out courting, I believe David Jacobs was presenting it then. Recorded on a Philips EL 3542 from a Jason FM tuner, I still have some about somewhere, goodness knows what they sound like now though.

Back in the 1970's I use to record the Top 40 every Sunday evening on my Duette cassette recorder either from my valved HMV1124 or my Brothers Dynatron TV/FM radio. Sadly all these tapes have now been thrown out many years ago.

Further to this earlier thread, it appears that any 'Pick Of The Pops' they managed to track down were included in last night's Radio 2 documentary.

It's here if you missed it:

I recorded this to listen to at my leisure. From the bits I heard it sounded pretty good.

I remember listening to Alan Freemans Saturday Rock Show in the early seventies on a TV that had a radio tuner. I think the controls were at the side of the TV.

We had a Ferguson tape recorder but that was only used for TOTP.

Setsappeal....Could I possibly have a copy of that POTP of the 1970s that Alan did? It was one of the first shows he did there, before fronting the Capital Rock show, leading to Pick Of The Pops-Take Two from January 1982 until January 1989.

Hi Trev
I will have to go deep in to the tape archives ( box in back of loft ) to retrieve this
It was stored on cassette but I don't think I ever played it back after recording and it's been in storage a long time, but if its serviceable then you're welcome to a copy
PM me with your contact details, format etc and we can take it from there.
