Default Identify the phone....

See attachment.

This is a still from the soundtrack to "The Days of Pearly Spencer" by David McWilliams, from 1967.

Played a lot on the pirate stations of the era, thanks to Ronan O'Rahilly.

Allegedly, McWilliams couldn't make it to the studio to do the vocals so he called-in from a phone - which gave the recording its distinctive, haunting sound.

Whatever, I don't recognise the phone. The full video - if it helps identification - is here: https://youtu.be/4VDS8uArR0A?t=4

No, I don't think he forgot to record the chorus while in the studio
YouTube
and I doubt Caterina Caselli did in Italy
YouTube

I think the 'phone effect' had recently appeared on mixing desks and was very fashionable ofter the Beatles used it, but that stage prop phone was a nice find!

On the Caterina Caselli version, I think they recorded the percussion and orchestra up the telephone!

The Ballymoney Times reports that the telephone vocal was done by singing through a loudhailer in the studio.

Fascinating!

I suspect we'll only ever get to the truth if someone can persuade Ronan O'Rahilly to surrender the details.

Whatever, I find it a fascinating and inspiring example of the use of a [pseudo]telephone effect in a commercially-successful record.
