Default What is this?

I found this item in a box of valves given to me recently. Looks like some paste/sealer black paste, circular in shape and rock hard now! Wondering what it was used for?
Thanks, Paul

Judging by the nomenclature, a foam rubber/plastic noise-exclusion pad to stick on a telephone earpiece? Old foam things are notorious for decaying into either crumbs or syrup... or both!

Agreed; the resolution of the first image is too low to make out the small letters, but I would translate the words in larger letters as "Clear hearing telephoning with the Laufer telefilter"
