Re: Schaub Lorenz 5001 Music Center repaired
If you have space on the tape and want to fill it with authentic radio programmes, I have a collection of Alan Freeman's Pick of the Pops from the 60's and early 70's.

Re: Schaub Lorenz 5001 Music Center repaired
I have only just seen this. A remarkable piece of kit and very well done. Very rare thing too. I repaired one for an old guy several years ago, and on the tape was a recording of one of the 70s rocket launches. Amazing thing that he didn't let me have....
Cheers, Steve P.

Hi Steve,
I know they can be pretty hard to get hold of but they are amazing contraptions! Just out of interest how many people here have one, or know of one? would be nice to keep a tally of how many we know about? Eddy |

Re: Schaub Lorenz 5001 Music Center repaired
I was lucky enough to visit the Science Museum's reserve collection earlier today. They have at least 3 Schaub Lorenz 5001. They don't seem to have made it into the online catalogue yet.

Thanks guys, so thats 4. From what i have read and researched i would take a stab at there must have been around 2000 complete units of the 5001 ever made.

Re: Schaub Lorenz 5001 Music Centre repaired.
Having tried to find one for years, I finally tracked one down in Newcastle. Couldn't wait to lay hands on it, but DHL (Drop, Lose and Hide) managed to drop it en route to Sussex! I now have one seriously bashed 5001 sitting in my workshop whilst I sort out the insurance claim. The dilemma will be - to try to repair it or to sell it on for spares and try and find another. The radio works and the tape unit tries to, but the front control knob was smashed. Another winter project, methinks......

Re: Schaub Lorenz 5001 Music Centre repaired.
I always fancied one of these after visiting a Tape recorder enthusiast in Malvern some years ago. { Can't remember his name unfortunately }
But it was in perfect order. 126 different tracks of music ,Brilliant. I hope you can sort out your insurance claim. Good Luck. Peter W......Reelguy |

Re: Schaub Lorenz 5001 Music Centre repaired.
Well the insurance claim is sorted - P4D, through whom I arranged the orginal transport are excellent and I have DHL investigating how this got dropped in the first place.
Question is now what? I think I'll start by getting the whole thing out of its cabinet to assess what is really working and what isn't. I guess one option is to find another unit and make one good one out of two! I'll keep you all posted............... |

Re: Schaub Lorenz 5001 Music Centre repaired.
Well - I've now got two; the most recent one works on tape and radio, but has the usual auto play after rewind fault, which I shall investigate.
I hadn't realised that you have to wait for the tape to rewind after each track - no wonder they weren't a great success!! Why didn't they simply reverse the tape travel and record the next track in reverse and so on? It would have saved the rewind time and the attendant noise, which on my machine sounds like it's going to take off!! Bryan |

Re: Schaub Lorenz 5001 Music Centre repaired.
OK - now we are three! I found another one for £34 and will now take the innards out of all three and make one good one, whilst trying to listen what is on all three tapes. Could be an interesting project!! Just as well I am retired........
