New dial for an old Philips radio
I have two of these superb Philips 671A radios ,I had some dials made they were printed on clear film which I sandwiched between two pieces of thin glass ,they look great ,only one thing in the dark the dial lamps don't illuminate the lettering , like they did on the old dial , any ideas!
Also I may have a spare dial should anyone need one let me know. These are very good radios with an rf stage . Mick. |

Re: New dial for an old Philips radio
Hi Mick, sometimes glass dials are edge-lit and sometimes floodlit from behind. Not sure which in this case. All you can do is experiment and see what looks best. Jerry

Hi Jerry they are lit from the edge of the glass if I remember correctly. I tried the lamp in different positions ,didn't make much difference , Mick.

Strategically placed LED strips maybe worth a try. Cheap and easy to power. J

Re: New dial for an old Philips radio
Could it be that the original glass had slightly raised lettering being thick printed with epoxy or similar medium. I guess your repro is inkjet or laser printed and therefor flat.

Re: New dial for an old Philips radio
My bet would be the originals are probably printed on class with some sort of paint mix. And that remains slightly opaque and let light through.
Or maybe it's because it's sandwiched and not enough light goes through the thinner glass to show up against the same amount of light on the top glass? You could try painting black the edges of the top sheet of glass? Derek |
