Grundig 5080 'hi-fi surround sound radiator' ??
Albeit inspired by the recent thread about the Grundig speaker, I have a question to ask about a different topic, hence this new thread. I have the 5080 set and looking at the web page linked below, it reads:
".....Connections for cartridges, tape recording and playback, External speaker, long-distance conductor and GRUNDIG hi-fi surround sound radiator." Does anyone know anything about this "hi-fi surround sound radiator" ? My own thoughts are that it is some kind of additional speaker system in a separate housing. What do you know? http://www.hifimuseum.de/1956-grundi...fruehjahr.html

On the same web site (1957) I've found this information - see picture.

I think I've got one of these with three feet and an eyelet somewhere.

Well, that's interesting Ted. If you're no longer interested in keeping it I would be interested.

Re: Grundig 5080 'hi-fi surround sound radiator' ??
I received the remains of one of these in a box of bits a few years ago. It has more in common with a lampshade than a hi-fi speaker.
From what I can ascertain it is squashed cylinder made of a stiff linen like material. Top and bottom are metal plates. Halfway and parallel between the top and bottom plates is another metal plate which has cut outs and forms the baffle. Attached either side of the baffle are two 6x4” speakers mounted cone to cone facing each other separated only by the baffle. Don’t know about the phase relationship in how the speakers are connected together. This is a mono speaker. I wondered how it sounded? Cannot have had much of a bass response. Eventually I will rebuild mine when I can find two speakers and some suitable “linen”. Peter |
