Default Trader alliances.

By which I mean where groups of independent traders/dealers band together to form a buying-consortium in order to squeeze bigger discounts out of manufacturers and so be better-able to compete against the major chains.

I remember there was one in the 80s called TIGER - which stood for something like "The Independent Group of Electrical Retailers". Now defunct, according to Companies House.

There was also an outfit called "Amateur Radio Bulk Buying Group" in the 70s and 80s, who traded as Catronics and sold - amongst other things - a kit for a simple implementation of the Plessey SL600-based SSB transceiver.

These days the only one I can come across is Euronics.

Does anyone remember any others?

I always thought RETRA was more of an industry lobby-group than a buying-organisation.

Back in the day some of the firms I worked for were members, they might have had some influence.

I used to work with a former director of RETRA when he was an office lad and operated the R/T.

Again, are Eurosonic just a distributor, or are they 'owned by their members' via some sort of subscription-mechanism?

From what I remember of TIGER you had to buy-into the group through an annual membership-fee, which, along with the collective-buying-discounts you were entitled to, were linked to your turnover.

Was one called Expert, vaguely recall seeing Decca 80 and 100 series badged up as Expert, may have been the for runner of Euronics.
Cant remember.

CIH Combined Independent Holdings. That was the big one. RETRA was a trade association that I belonged to. Radio Electrical Television Retailers Association. John.
