Default Tascam BR-20

Hi - I have just purchased a BR-20 and have found when trying to mix down from an Akai 4 track that channel 2 is seeing no signal. I used the phono sockets from the Akai to the Tascam and then cobbled a lead from Phono to XLR, checked this on channel 1-OK, but still no VU reading or signal transfer. I have gone through the recording procedure as per the manual so believe this is a fault.
The machine plays existing tape OK on both channels. Can anyone help or advise who can.

Regards
Ian
