ID Please of a 1961 UK Transistor TV. Identified as a Perdio Portarama 3.
Good day Gentlemen,
I've been reading quite thoroughly issues of the UK TV trade magazine "Practical Television". In the January 1966 issue there is a 8.5" B&W 405/625 transistor TV unknown to me (see photo). An early Perdio perhaps ? Having followed with much interest the topics about the Transvista & other early British all-transistor TVs, just trying to ID this one by curiosity. Best Regards jhalphen Paris/France |

Yes Rich a Mk3 Perdio dual standard.
They made two dual standard models the early one is the picture with the UHF tuning on the top and at least two 405 models. They work extremely well. John. |

I think the original Perdio went
bankrupt around the time the dual standard chassis was introduced and all the stock was sold off. |

Re: ID Please of a 1961 UK Transistor TV
Not sure where they were made Bob. Perdio were one of the many that collapsed in the early 60's shake out. The development costs of their four or more television receivers must have drained their resources especially as they were a very small company compared with Thorn, Pye etc and were limited [other than the Mk2 model that appears to have sold in quite large numbers] to short production runs of what was considered an expensive specialist product.
They had good quality control and their products had a reputation for reliability but the main business was the transistor radio and that market was beginning to be taken over by imports. I'm very surprised the Perdio Co were not taken over by one of the leading makers to carry on production but due to the turndown, money must have been short. The trade was in a bad state in the early 60's mainly caused by the long drawn out saga involving the Pilkington committee, the delay of which resulted in most of the British manufacturing companies either collapsing or being merged. Sadly Perdio just took a while longer to do it. John. |

Quite possible although I don’t know for certain. We did have a Samwell & Hutton wobulator when I worked at DER in High St West in Sunderland which had been apparently liberated from the Perdio factory upon its closure. It was mainly used to realign Thorn 1400 TVs after they had been “twiddled” by the field staff in a vain attempt to remove inter carrier buzz.

Re: ID Please of a 1961 UK Transistor TV
Hi to all,
Thank You! to all who replied with interesting information about this early British transistor TV. Over here in France, alas nothing as advanced from the national production, by a long shot. OK, there was the Celard "TeleCapte" with LW/MW radio (see pix) Memories of jaw dropping seeing the Sony TV5-303M miniature 5" set in 1964 next to all the bulky "woody" cabinet TVs.
