Question Deckert & Homolka box

Hi all,

I just found a nice wooden box marked "Ericsson - Decker & Homolka, Budapest". A quick google search gave me the following image:
My box is precisely the one on the left: anybody could tell me what is it meant for ? Maybe the batteries ?
