Default Bush TV161

Just pulled this out of the shed this evening, skip find from a few months ago. At the time I had removed the lopt to the hot press to dry out. I replaced the lopt and switched on.

Oh no!! That familiar smell of ozone as soon as the heaters came up. The overwind was breaking down to the dy heater winding. Luckily I had a spare from one I scrapped years ago.

It has a re-gun tube and there's plenty of life left in it. Some work too do around the frame stage but that's it for tonight.

Cheers,
John Joe.

Well done on the rescue! It's an A640 chassis - is it a TV193D? Looks good - they were one of my favourite duals.

Thanks!! Yes A640. It's a tv206ds. These were referred to as the valiant series here. Bush had a factory on Shanowen road in Santry, North Dublin.

Changed a few resistors around the height control. Looking a bit better tonight. According to the label on the tube it was regunned in 1982. I recon it did not see much use till the lopt failed.

Cheers,
John Joe.

The Bush TV161 chassis was a preferred chassis for TV-DX. Plenty available as scrap in the early nineteen-eighties. I went through six to find a A50-120WR CRT with some life, scavenging LOPT's and Band 1 tuner keys as well.
Re-guns were still available at between £30-40, but well beyond my means.
One CRT had a sticker 'GOLDSTAR'. I assume it was a re-gunned tube.

During the 1960s the "Goldstar" trade mark was used on Thorn-AEI Mazda mono CRTs. didn't make the tubes any better, the tubes were still prone to internal open circuit cathodes.
The TV set we are discussing was still available in 1972, models TV191 and TV193, both sets employed the compact version of the A640 chassis.
In 1984 I used a Bush TV191 as a picture monitor for my standards converter development. A little label on the front panel indicated that the set was made in Eire.

Hi
I've never seen a TV206 - probably for home sale only. Last of the A640 chassis.
Now is that a CTV174D I see in your picture? There's someone on this forum who would kill for one of those!

Hello Glyn,

No, it looks like the Bush equivalent, the CTV174D.

I used to have two 19" examples. The Bush had a remband I CRT which was a bit low emission, the Murphy a push through Mazda Rimband 3 type. The CRT in the latter was excellent.

I'm guessing that was because it was relatively easy to combine 625-line reception with the narrower 405-line vision IF bandwidth?

The push button tuning wasn't ideal for scanning DX frequencies though.

ntscuser: The Bush TV161 series had better flywheel sync, especially relevant on fast-fading signals.

I had the earlier TV135R (Murphy V929U) as well. I drilled the cabinet to mount a box containing pots for line & frame freq as well as AGC switching.

No such molestation was necessary with my Murphy V2015D version of the TV161 series. I believe the Murphy 2015D was the earlier variant of the TV161.

Hi Glyn,
The colour set in the picture is a Bush A823 (I'd love to get a dual standard colour!) Thought It would be nice to picture them together they both stem from 1972. Hard to think they're nearly 45 years old!

I think these dual standard sets are well worth saving. They seem to be getting thin on the ground.

A Friend of mine used to rent a large number of these, he said they had great gain in fringe areas.

Sadly the selector lever has been removed. It had been tied up in the 625 position. Also the aerial sockets have been removed, although I have a few spare tuners somewhere.

Hi there
I was fooled by the colour Bush as it has six push buttons - the CTV184 and so on had only four. Also the cabinet looks like a CTV174D - the one that says 'IC colour lock' on the front. One of the last duals, very different to the CTV25/162/167 in the decoder and output stages using solid-state RGB tube drive and an SL901 on the 'wrong' side of the decoder PCB. It used the CTV25 Mk3 line tower, though.
Back to your A640 set - I should think you'll find a systems switch link somewhere. Were these sets made in Eire or just assembled there? I don't think this model was ever sold here.
Glyn
PS. I note from the back cover that this was a VHF only set - possibly there was never a tuner linkage.

These sets were VHF only but dual standard (405/625) so there was a tuner linkage - standard being selected by keyplate for each button

These sets were the best dual standard sets with high gain and great pictures on both 405 and 625.
As RTE closed the 405 line network in 1978 someone probably removed the selector lever after this or the set was operating in a 625 line only area of Ireland. Until DSO RTE used both VHF band 3 and UHF for their 625 line network.

This set has the combined uhf/vhf tuner. The one I scrapped years ago had the combined tuner too but it to only mentioned the vhf socket, I think this was to stop confusion as it only had vhf 405/626 keys fitted.

Had a rummage in my friends tv shop today and found the manual at the bottom of the filling cabinet.
