Postcode of the transmitter is given on the Ofcom website and it isn't Orfordness?
I reckon it's about 3dB stronger this time.

Not so good here in Manchester today, but I think it may be slowly coming up in strength.

There were apparently unspecified issues with the pig farm site that resulted in re-negotiating with Ofcom to use the redundant Orfordness site. I'm glad Ofcom have agreed as they are getting out rather well! I guess the mast at Orfordness is a rather more substantial structure than your typical low power mediumwave site, as relative signal strength here in Ely is much better than that received from the various Smooth, Absolute and BBC local stations of similar power and distance.

Reception here is excellent with the Sailor 66T on an external wire and also of entertainment quality on a modern Tecsun portable. Distance around 60 miles.

I should hope so! I recall, very vaguely, it being a top-fed grounded vertical (may have used a gamma match) with the feeder going in at 50 Ohm without further matching. It'll handle 250kW.

I can receive it here but not too strong on a Grundig YB500 with internal aerial.

Loud and clear here, a little mush and minor fading. And it roughly DFs to Orfordness, the roughness is my fault! And it's 13kHz wide! The red bit is the filter at 13kHz, there was saxophone being played when I sampled this, you can see the harmonics.

I'm also getting a good signal on 1368kHz courtesy of Manx Radio.

Got it here too, 462m ish quite listenable with background noise, then after a few mins it fades out completely.

I’m also able to pick up Caroline north from Manx radio on 1368khz, 221m ish, but it’s very faint.

Hope they keep it on for good while so I can experiment with other sets and AEs.

Just found the Caroline/Manx link on 221m/1368kHz and that is putting in an even stronger signal but the fading and co channel mess is getting pretty bad now. It is how I remember listening to evening MW radio though in its heyday

Well happy though as I've been trying for weeks and wasn't expecting to hear it at all down here especially not with just car/indoor aerials.

Hi,

I’m getting an absolutely cracking signal on my Sony ICF-7600DS and also on a non-descript Sony car radio…..

I’ve now got a good reason to get the rest of the old 60’s transistor radios in the collection working!

Well, what would have Harold Wilson thought….

Terry.

A super signal here in Manchester this morning at 7:30 AM. The odd deep fade though. Then daylight conditions made it slowly descend into the noise. This on a Sangean/Roberts 909 receiver. Also good on one of my 60's trannies.

648 Khz is fine during the day if you excuse a somewhat weak signal. It is steady until the sky-wave starts to cause fading after dark.

Has anyone in Yorkshire managed to pick up the relay from Manx Radio?
Or is that just impossible?

Hearing both 648 and 1368 this morning on the little Sony ICF-480L portable set with the small Tecsun loop alongside. They are about the same strength though 648 is far more consistent. 1368 is suffering from fast ionospheric effects. The fading on 648 is long and not too deep and occasionally the signal is very strong. Without the loop they are barely discernible.

Listening on the Sony, 648 is very reminiscent of the 1960s days here listening on a small portable. It's listenable if it's the only outlet for pop music. Considering how folk complain about the quality of DAB it's amazing what we used to put up with.

A choice of music on MW at last. I for one won't be listening to Smooth Radio on MW anymore.

I managed to hear for a few minutes Friday evening, I think, about 7Pm here in Sheffield , then it closed down . I have also briefly heard a station called Seagull Radio on my Philips IC 50 model 323- an extremely sensitive set.

Question Re: Radio Caroline to return on Medium Wave.

Does anyone know how I can tune into this on a 1988 Roberts RCS80? It is too close to R5 Postwick on 693 and won't stop on 648, but scans straight past 648, presumably because the RCS80's manufacturer's settings are such that there has to be a minimum sig strength for the scanner to stop at a frequency and lock onto a station? Unless there's a manual override which i can't find!

I listened again last night on 648 with the R-1000 but the shrill hetrodyning was present, which meant down tuning to 644, with the inevitable break-through from the talk station. Still comes in loud and clear on the Philips portable though

Might seem like a couple of dumb questions but...

...Where's the Radio Caroline studio located?

Where's the Radio Caroline transmitter located?

Lawrence.
