Default Yaesu FRG7 illumination.

Hi there all, my name is Jeff.

I have purchased a Yaesu FRG7. All works except for the two lamps that illuminate the centre MHz wheel. I bought some from a model shop but they are not bright enough, also I have been told to get LED's with a resistor in line.

Could anybody tell me what bulbs or LED's to use and what size resistor?

Thanks,

Jeff M3LWG.

Hi Jeff,

I came across this article on a FRG-7 newsgroup for replacement bulbs:

Quote:
The Preselector + 'MHz' bulbs are wire-ended types and were probably specified
as 40 or 50mA at 12V, but they work at about 35mA 8.5V in the preselect and even
less in the MHz positions due to the series resistors R13, 14. At this reduced current,
they should last for ages.

They are covered in little rubber caps, and to fit in the caps, the replacements need
to be 4mm diameter, sometimes known as 'T1¼' size, though without the caps any
dia. up to 5.5mm could be used. I recommend that all four preselector bulbs be
replaced in order to assure equal brightness.

The main dial bulbs were metal-cap pre-wired types, presumably rated at 12V
40-50mA, as they draw about 40mA at 10.5V. The bulb was 5mm Ø, and in order
to fit the grommets which support them, I recommend replacement with
LES 14V 50mA types, with the original wires soldered to the new bases.

======================================
In the UK, the following types are currently available
A wire-ended type is available from Maplin, Ref. PJ77, rated 12V 65mA
An LES-cap type is available from Maplin, Ref. BU15, rated 14V 50mA
An LES-cap 5mm type is available from R-S, Ref. 586-093, rated at 14V 50mA
A wire-ended 5mm type available from R-S, Ref. 587-074, rated at 14V 50mA
Hope it helps.

Regards,
Tim

Based on those specs, it looks like a 5mm white LED with about 1kOhm in series with it would work very nicely. Assuming the supply is DC. All that's necessary is to find which end is positive and get the LED the right way round.

Disclaimer: I've never seen an FRG-7, so might be talking rubbish. There might be problems with the light distribution because many white LEDs are designed with a rather narrow viewing angle, so they might just make a 'spot' on the thing they're supposed to be illuminating. Look for diffused ones and all should be well.

I would also go with the White LED option. There are numerous ultra bright/superbright LED's for sale at http://www.phenoptix.com .Very, very cheap and extremely fast delivery. Hope this helps. Regards. Damian.

Jeff,
If you PM me your address I'll send you some white LEDs to play with. They have short legs as the've been in a PCB, but as you'll have to add Rs and wires it's no disadvantage.
