Until yesterday I have taken no notice of the fuses as it was fine the 1a fuse inside my radiogram must have been put in by a previous owner. The fuses I bought from eBay however are in fact 0.4a slow blow fuses

You've certainly done the right thing by ordering the correct fuses for the set.

It looks likely that a previous owner had the original fuse blow, probably due to gradual increase in current draw due to leaking output stage coupling capacitors, so got round the problem by incorrectly fitting a higher rated fuse.

Now that the higher rated fuse has been forced to blow, it has to be hoped that no other damage has been done to the set.

You may well find that the set will work for a while when you fit the replacement fuse, but if there is the odd leaky capacitor around the output valves, then it will probably blow again.

It's not the end of the world to replace a couple of capacitors with help and advice from forum members and will be well worth doing to keep a nice set going into the future.

It's possible that a fault has caused the new fuse to blow. If it's glass you can check it visually. Beyond that if we're to make progress with this you'll need a test meter.

OK it is a glass fuse just had a look and the new fuse is still fine so what else could it be I can get a volt meter I just need to know what to test. Also I was having problems with the FM radio circuit before this happened could it be the ECC 85 valve

The fact neither the turntable or the amplifier works points to a very simple fault. In the absence of a meter I suggest you replace the fuse in the mains plug with a known good one, by which I mean one which works with another appliance. Forget valves and capacitors for now.

Hi Graham

I've just swapped the 13A fuse in the plug with one from our food processor and still no joy I can see testing and soldering in my future

When you get a meter please post a picture of its front face here in the forums. Then we'll be able to advise you as to which range to use for testing purposes.

Extract from circuit diagram. It appears that the incoming mains lead is routed to a 6 way tag strip or plug/socket.

As the turntable doesn't operate the question I have is is there power getting as far as the mains switch? It could be something as simple as a broken wire in the mains lead.

Steve.

Use the meter on its lowest ohms range to check for continuity from the LIVE and NEUTRAL pins of the mains plug to tags 1 and 2 as shown in the diagram above.

Player unplugged from the mains and power off of course.

---------------------------

Does this player have a MAINS OUT socket on the back panel?

Right I've test the mains wire from where it plugs on to the power supply and it has a good 250v coming out I have also done the continuity test on the plug the meter stays on 1 no beep. It doesn't have a mains out socket on the back but according to the picture graham posted above pins1&2 are main in pins 3&4 are mains out which has nothing connected to them and 5&6 are power supply for my turntable

Is there 250V on both sides of the mains switch?

With the player turned on of course.

Look at the diagram in post #33. The mains switch has a pair wires going into it and and a pair of wires coming out of it. Check for 250VAC on both pairs of wires.
