Default EM80 (Magic Eye) Russian equivalent difference

Thought this might be useful to some

I have recently had to replace a Telefunken EM80 magic eye as the original was very dim, after looking around I found the cheapest NOS was on eBay and it was the Russian equivalent being sold from Lithuania.

So it was ordered and arrived within a week all was ok, but I noticed the two following differences

1- The Russian equivalent is much taller
2- The gap between pin 1-9 are slightly offset in comparison to the Telefunken

I have taken two photos of the valves side by side, (the glass diameter is the same),the extra length should not cause too much of a problem as the displays are more or less located at the same height from the valve base but if you are short on headroom is may cause you a problem.

When the new valve is plugged in the display was slightly pointing to the left of where it should be, in my case it was not a problem because of the way the valve base is held in place I loosened two crews and twisted it to face the correct way this may not be an option in some radios.

Finally two photos of the original and the new one in a low light room, you can see the original can hardly be seen even in low light and during the day could not be seen at all.

cheers
Darius

Thanks for the information Darius.

I can confirm that one of these fitted to a FenmamII is a bit of a tight squeeze. It is mounted upside down in the radio and you have to slide the mounting bracket as far upwards as it will go if the tip of the magic eye is not to contact the dial chord.

Phil.

Or even a Fenman II? I thought a FenmamII was some obscure eastern european thing when I read the OP

A Fenman II it is.
I'm in the US at present and I think the time-shift may have got (gotten?) to me. Feeling better tonight though.
For the record(!) I'm also the proud owner of a Fenman1RG
