Default Philips 563A/15

I am going to attempt a restoration of this 1947 Philips model 563A TV set.

This set incorporated a radio receiver, the glass tuning scale has been removed for safety reasons. Break this part and I'll never find another.

As can be seen from the second picture the set employs EF50 RF pentodes. The frequency changer uses two ECH35s for the sound and vision mixers, the triodes work as a push-pull local oscillator.

Two more ECH35s are used in the timebase circuits. It's amazing how Philips got away with this valve when considers the common connection of the triode grid to G3 of the hexode section.

EHT for the Mullard MW22-7 CRT comes from a voltage doubler circuit employing two HVR2 high voltage rectifiers. The 3KV pulse present at the anode of the EL38 line output valve supplies the EHT circuit. No dangerous Mains EHT in this set.
I'd imagine that the 563A is a development of the pre-war model 2405.

I reckon that the restoration of this set is going to be quite a challenge.

I reckon that will be a nice little job. A neat looking set and it will be interesting to see how it performs.

Hi
What a lovely set! I used to own the console version, the 663A up until 1988 when I sold it The 663A had two chassis decks, the PSU and timebases at the bottom and the rest up top. I did start restoration at the time but unfortunately didn't get very far. Your set looks untouched. Please let us know how you get on.

regards
Jon

Very Philips looking inside. Is this the one that Jeffrey bought from the the Bennett-Levy sale?

All I bought were a couple of Pyes. A B16T and a VT2.

Definitely a nice looking set. CRT's a Mullard so it stands a good chance.

Initial inspection shows that the set is complete and has not been tampered with.
One of the HVR2 EHT rectifiers has been substituted with a Mazda U21. According to the Mullard Maintenance Manual the HVR2 has a 4 volt filament and I'm sure that the U21 has a 2 volt filament.
I'd better checkout the underside of the chassis.

I love these 9 inch low profile "side by side" TVs. I bought an Ekco TS48 at the B-L sale but it's huge - this little Philips looks pretty compact - I want one!!!!
I'm looking forward to a blow-by-blow account of the restoration David. Good luck.
Cheers
Brian

Correct David. The U21 has a 2v heater. It's surprising how many guys think this set has mains eht due to the huge transformers and the presence of the HVR2's. J.

That U21 valve must have been running very bright, no series resistor has been inserted into the heater supply.
I've found another Mazda valve, a UU5 fitted instead of the Mullard FW4/500 HT supply recifier.
The set employs three mains transformers. One supplies the HT supply and has a 6.3volt winding for the receiver valves. A surprisingly large heater transformer for the timebase valves. There is a special high insulation heater transformer to supply the HVR2 EHT rectifiers.

I am connecting the HT line to the mains supply via a 1N4007 diode and series resistor to give the HT line a taste of some voltage.

That LOPT looks like the innards of a PP9. Just four 6BA screws for the connections. J.

Default Philips 583A/15. Get it ready for Mikey's bash.

Let's see if I can get the Philips 583A ready to deliver it to it's owner at Mikey's bash next month.
This is a difficult set to work on because of the position of the radio tuning scale. The station pointer drive cord is operated by an assembly mounted high up above the chassis making it impossible to work on the chassis if it becomes necessary to invert it in order to perform certain servicing tasks.

To simplify servicing I've made a jig which will make it possible to invert the chassis. Two pieces of plywood have been cut to size and these are placed at each side of the chassis. A wood bar is placed between the wood side members to stiffen things up.
The 583A is a complex receiver as it has switches to allow the set to operate as a MW/LW radio receiver as well as television.
A considerable amount of work has already been done but the fact the set is so awkward to work on has hampered do any further attempts to finish the restoration. The new service jig might speed things up.

A very interesting set David, this 563A.
I'm certainly going to follow this!

The 463A would have bee the 563A-television-only model.
I have a 383A, which is very similar to the 463A, i.e. without the radio part.
Not sure what the precise differences between the 463A and 383A are.
Your loudspeaker cloth still looks nice, and the mask perhaps might be serviceable as well.
Do you have the radio dial glass?

Hello Jac,
The owner of the set has retained the dial glass for safe keeping.

One of the first TV receivers to have flyback EHT. Two HVR2 diodes employed in a voltage doubler.

Hi David,

I didn't realize that the set is not yours.
The waveband selector switches can be a problem.
Philips used these in many radios, and they are a nightmare to figure out.
I had some work on those in my 663A, which chassis might also look a bit like the 563A. In the 663A it is split in 2 parts though, mounted above each other.
