Default Sony TC206SD

3Hi just trying to have and look at this tape deck. It wouldn't play tapes so I got a new set of belts. Now it runs very fast. I have tried to adjust the speed control it does speed up and down. When at its lowest the tape still runs fast. Would anyone have any idea how I can slow it down

Thanks mark

If it has a pinch roller solenoid make sure the armature/pivot/lever mechanism is operating correctly. If there is any stickiness (old lubricant) in either/all of these, the 'take-up' reel drive motor will tend to pull the tape through rather than the capstan spindle & pinch roller combination.

This can also manifest itself as reduced/total loss of output if the tape is not in contact with the playback head.

If you have fast and slightly uneven speed, and all the belts are on the right pulleys (no 'riding'), the motor control IC is toast. Replace the speed pot first in case it is bad /worn.

First look on the pot for any markings, replace with same. If not, you will need to use the schematic.

Very unlikely that the pot has failed, even more unlikely is the drive chip

Make sure you have belts on the correct parts of the motor pulley, it can be any easy to mistake to get them around the wrong way, the only time I came across a motor control ic that faulty it was running red hot with absolutely no affect on the motor speed

Blimey, I must have been unlucky then.
I have had the motor IC fail on numerous units that have passed through my hands over the years. Such as: late 70s Panasonic/Technics decks (M215?), one deck of an an AIWA RX20, a Triumph TC400, a Dual/Bettor music centre, to name just a few. It is noteworthy that these were mostly 'powered' soft touch mechs.

In all cases, the symptoms were the same. Speed at least 15% faster and varying.

The tricky ones have the IC inside the actual motor.

I don't think the belt could go in any other place on the pulleys

Wow that is a list! I never knew that other companies back then used Sony motors and boards.

In my foggy memory there were 2 belts driven off the motor, lower one for the capstan and an upper one for the FF/REW and autostop , though at my state of mind I am prepared to accept I am wrong

They weren't all sony motors/boards. The only thing they had in common was the fault symptoms!

If you never had this unit running correctly before, You might check to see if the capstan pulley is a 50 cy or 60 cy one. I know here we had to change a lot of the overseas pulleys as the tapes (and record players) ran at the wrong speeds. (60 cy here in the U.S.)

Putting the belt on wrong, getting a twist in it, or having it ride up on the edge of a pulley can cause the overspeed condition too. I never had that happen to me. Nope. Unnuh. And I stick to that statement. :P

That is only the case with AC mains motors, In this case it seems to be a low voltage DC type which of course is unaffected by the mains frequency!
