Hotpoint dishwasher
We have a 32 year old dishwasher which is functioning well except for the handle that opens the door.
It broke off and as its connected to another piece, I glued it back on with Araldite metal which is what I usually use for repairs. However this has now come off, before I reglue it back on, can anyone recommend a glue that would or permanently? |

Re: Hotpoint dishwasher
I've found Gorilla Glue to be very tough and long lasting.
I don't know what the active ingredients are but you apply it then spray with water to activate it.

Re: Hotpoint dishwasher
I'd always look at en epoxy like araldite though one I've found good is called powermix. But it depends very much on the detail. Breaks where there is little surface area are always going to be hard to fix for example. Any contamination like grease is of course going to cause a failure.
The powermix isn't foolproof, but at work we used to call it 'forever glue' because once glued it was, well you get the idea. Certainly fixed the faulty design of door handles on our fridges. Depending on the break, adding reinforcement in the way of pins or screws may help. |

Re: Hotpoint dishwasher
If the plastic part is made from Polypropylene or Polyethylene it will be very difficult to get a good bond.

Re: Hotpoint dishwasher
This is the sort of repair where I would be looking to drill a series of small holes into the parts and then fit splined pins using a suitable cyanoacrylate adhesive.
The pins would be expected to take most of the future stress.

Re: Hotpoint dishwasher
We use something called Plexus MA300 at work - it's thick (less runny than Araldite) and sticks most substrates very very strongly. The class of glues is 'methacrylates'. Available in small 2-pack tubes on ebay - but still rather expensive. Likes to be refrigerated once open to extend shelf life. Much cheaper than a new dishwasher...

Re: Hotpoint dishwasher
Drilling a couple of holes and using long self-tapping screws, possibly with glue on the mating faces might be worth a try. Handles take a lot of strain after all.

Re: Hotpoint dishwasher
I have had good results with Locktight .Its similar to araldite .Comes in a 2 tube applicator with a nozzle that mixes the two components together as it passes down the tube . It sets in a few seconds so you have to be quick but i found it to be much stronger than Araldite

Re: Hotpoint dishwasher
Is it possible to create a new handle using a 3D printer?
