Default Re: 'The Story of the Marshall Amplifier'

Re the volume control and Spinal Tap spoof [p36*] the modern version is "Brian Pern" the second series of which has been upgraded to BBC2 [from 4]. Ep 2 is on tonight. Didn't see any Marshall Amps last week but I'm sure they were in Series one where it was rumoured that BP was based on Peter Gabriel who then made an appearance himself. It's possible that the band's name "Stowe Boys" is a reference to a Public School education! One of the most dryly funny things I've seen for a long time with everyone clearly enjoying themselves.

Favourite quote from last week [Brian re fellow band members] "I suppose we were all a bit childish....but it's not my fault it's theirs!" on I-player

Oh yes, the 'US' Vox amps were totally different to the UK ones, and were not well received. That was kinda when the rot set in for Vox and the spiral downwards from being 'the amp' to relative obscurity (yes they came back much later) began. And of course it was Marshall who took over the crown. Incidentally, the whole thing about the Marshall sound; the so called 'dirty' sound as used by Hendrix, Clapton etc was never a part of the company's marketing in the early days. I can distinctly remember reading a Marshall ad in a weekly music paper in around '72 saying something about the amps' "clear" sound. Even I as a fledgling guitarist knew that virtually everyone who owned a Marshall did so because of the way in which it distorted so readily!

If you take a look at the cast for This Is Spinal Tap and A Mighty Wind, you will notice that the band members are played by the same actors in each. there was also a film Best In Show, where two of these also act. A bit of trivia; Christopher Guest, who played Nigel Tufnel in This is Spinal Tap, is the 5th Baron Haden-Guest, despite being American; he is married to Jamie Lee Curtis. Back on topic, I must stay in more!

Exclamation 'Play it Loud'-The Jim Marshall Story

Did anyone see last nights programme about Marshall Amplifiers? Heavy Rock & Metal, etc., aren't my cup of tea, but I watched it mainly to see and hear something about the early days and how Marshall got started. Listening to people like Joe Brown and others reminising about the early days was, to me, the best part, althought a little more technical info would have been welcome. I didn't realise that the first Marshall amps. were based on Fender ones, for example.

And concrete cows, surely?

And don't forget roundabouts......

Wasn't Aston Martin at Newport Pagnell?
