Default Vintage guitar amp

I've not come across one of these before. Does anybody recognise it? I'm guessing it's UK made but that's strictly a guess. Truth is I have no information at all - just the pic. Anybody?

Not a guitar amp. It's a PA amp.

Ah - okay. Nevertheless I'd still be interested to know the name of the manufacturer if anyone recognises the unit.

I suspect that there won't be one as such. I think it's possible that someone has made it up from bits and pieces, look at the way the switch is mounted in that hole etc. although I could be completely wrong. The case could well be from an old PA or guitar amplifier and somebody has used this to fit what you see in the picture. You'd need to see round the back and into the innards to really know.

It's a Linear Concord amplifier in a box.

Well done, Steve!

Edit: It's possible they've cut up the original mesh cover to make those two side meshes.

I don't think so. The side meshes look like they are expanded aluminium and the cover of the Conchord would have been steel. However, the "salt & pepper" covering of the front looks a lot like the grille-cloth used by Marshall at one time. This wouldn't be too surprising as it was a quite common grille-cloth then.

Of course, this could be used as a guitar amplifier, as Conchords were...

Colin.

It 'could' be used as a guitar amplifier - an old work colleague of mine used to play his bass through one in a local dance band. The two volume controls are clearly marked as 'mic' and 'gram', so not 'intended' for use as a guitar amplifier.

It's a Linear amp (or derivative).
I have seen some fitted in truly awful cabinets that were made by the factory!
The cloth on the front is, as Colin says, the same as used on the early Marshalls. It was supplied by Radiospares, but the actual name of it escapes me at the moment. Was it Vynair?
Do you have a picture of the chassis?

You may have noticed in another current thread where I fitted a 'Stern Radio' Mullard 5 - 10 amplifier into an old cabinet with a 12 inch radiogram speaker, neither of which are intended for playing a guitar through, but I do, as well as other general amplification duties, and it works just fine.

Most of my fellow muso friends are older than me and in conversations over the years many have confirmed that during the 60s, as guitarists and bassists they used Linear amps before getting say a Selmer or a Vox. They were definitely used by both guitarists and bass players in that era.

Any chance of a pic of the chassis? It should have two EL34's as the OP valves but I've seen one with 807's. more info on linear on John's site here - http://www.chambonino.com/work/linear/info1.html
