Default Grundig 2 x 4 Plus (770)

Hi all

I'm having another go getting this running.

It powers on, the cassette carriage light comes on and both reel motors begin to spin and the tape led is lit, after so long the machine appears to go into a standby state and the red tape led flashes.

I've checked the voltages and all appear correct, I've also cleaned the switch contacts and the fault persists, does anyone have any experience of the above issue?

Pic nabbed from ebay

Kind Regards, Andy

Sound's like the mechanism is trying to return to the unloaded position but is unable to do so, or the logic is not being told what state the deck is in, mode or mecha switches?, mech timing ok?,
Greg.

Just to confirm, the mechanism is already in the unloaded position and there is no cassette loaded. I could be wrong but I don't think these have mode switches? Happy to be proved wrong. I've also checked and cleaned the switches around the loading ring to no avail. I'm sure I've heard of this before but can't recall where now.

No mode switch as we usually know them, but there's threaded/unthreaded contact on the loading ring.

So you've already done the basic thing to check maybe check continuity between contact and the microcontroller is the next point.

Have you checked the door switch?

It can get temperamental with age

Yeah checked the door switch too, the machine does shutdown after a short while and the tape led flashes, pressing the door contact reengages the mechanism but it just returns to its perpetual reel spinning

Also: beware the (blue) tants, Grundig loved them, and they broke.
